Norton 360 Questions

Hello.

I have a laptop that I don't use very often. I was using it when it suggested a smart scan, so I said yes. When that finished, it told me N360 needed to be updated. So I did. When that finished, it told me it was unable to verify my subscription because I had not connected to the internet.

My questions are:

- Should smart scan run on outdated definitions?

- Is it weird that I was able to update the software, even though it didn't recognize my subscription and I was not online?

Thanks.

Hi dallen24,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

Floplot answered the other questions for you so I'll take this one. N360 does have pretty good backup software and will write to CD/DVD, single or multiple. However I recommend against using this type of media for your backups because quite simply the media is inherently unreliable for critical douments that you cannot afford to lose. I used to back up to DVD myself and I had one too many media failures when I really needed it. I switched to hard drive backup at least 10 years ago and have never looked back.

You are much better off to invest in a relatively cheap external USB or firewire drive for your backup needs.

When you say can you restore a hard drive image, I assume you mean actually restoring your OS and all programs (along with documents of course) so that you do not have to reinstall your OS and applications, is this correct?

If so, then I'm afraid the answer is a resounding NO. N360 is great for backing up documents and most other things but it is a file based backup and cannot restore your OS and programs to a working state. For that you need an image backup program, not a file based backup program. If you just want to be able to restore all your documents and such, then N360 should work fine for you.

If you want to be able to restore your OS and programs without having to reinstall them, then I would suggest a solution which combines Norton Ghost and NIS. Norton Ghost is an imaging (as well as file based backup program) program and takes a complete sector by sector image of your hard drive so that you can fully restore your OS and programs to their previous working state.

Hope this helps and please let me know if you have more questions on this.

Thanks

Allen

Hi.  I have a seven year-old Gateway, XP SP3 with Norton Internet Security.  My subscription is almost done and was thinking of purchasing Norton 360.  Had some questions:

1)  Does 360 have the same firewall and anti-virus protection as Internet Security?  I do like how my google searches are safeguarded with green checkmarks.

2)  How good is the backup software?  Could I backup individual files and folders to CD/DVD?  Would I be able to backup/restore a hard drive image?  If I backup a large folder, would the software burn multiple DVDs?

3)  Before I install 360, should I uninstall Internet security first?  Is there a Norton clean utility I should run to remove old components?
