Norton 360 removal tool not working

Hi,

I uninstalled Norton from Windows (via Programs & Features) as I no longer plan to use it. However, I suspect there may still be leftover files or components on my system.

To clean this up, I tried running the Norton Removal Tool, but I consistently receive Error Code 2. I’ve attempted this in normal mode as well as Safe Mode (including Safe Mode with Networking), but the error persists in all cases.

Could someone please advise on how to resolve this issue or suggest an alternative way to completely remove any remaining Norton components?

Thanks in advance.

@Rahul_M Which removal tool did you use? When you use the tool perform a “remove only” so that the product won’t automatically try to reinstall.

Older versions:
Regular removal tool for versions prior to 24.xx
https://norton.com/nrnr

New versions:
https://www.norton.com/nortonremover

I was using 26.2 prior to remove that item i thought https://www.norton.com/nortonremover this should work but giving the error even in safe mode with LAN connection.

That is the correct remover tool for that version. Do you log into Windows under admin credentials?

If the Norton product DOES NOT still load at boot. The only other way to remove remnant Norton folders is manually search for and delete them. They are located in several places in drive C:\ .

C:\Program Files\Norton
C:\ProgramData\Norton
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Norton
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Norton
C:\Users\All Users\Norton

**Make sure you reboot when done.

Of course I have admin access. But those do not remove common files access registry entry and many such area. And what is going on with norton a simple remove tool also not working.

My suggestion is reinstall the product from your Norton account, reboot and re-run the removal tool. Do a removal only.

Oh, absolutely clearly I’m hopelessly outdated. Back in my day at IIT (a mere 30 years ago), they somehow forgot to include the extremely advanced and intellectually demanding subject of “Running a Norton Removal Tool.” Truly a glaring gap in the curriculum.

Do you think MIT might offer a specialized course for this? Perhaps a full-fledged program dedicated to the fine art of uninstalling antivirus software? I’d hate to attempt something this complex without proper Ivy League training.

FWIW!! I personally do not work for nor am I an employee of Norton nor Gen Digital. We Guru’s DO NOT have inside information regarding how Norton codes and creates their products. That leaves us offering solutions ( possible ones ) that have worked on earlier versions. When removing a Norton product via Windows Programs and Features that leaves a total mess that, the removal tool doesn’t see what it needs to remove. Reinstalling the product corrects that issue in most cases and allows for a clean removal at restart. Checking with support is the other option available.

Ohhh absolutely, totally believable. You definitely have zero connection to Norton or Gen Digital just a group of mysteriously well-informed “gurus” who somehow spend their free time troubleshooting their products with near-professional expertise. Pure coincidence, I’m sure.

And of course, the classic “we don’t have inside information” disclaimer because nothing says not an employee like knowing exactly how messy the uninstall process is and recommending the same workaround support would give. Truly inspiring levels of… independence.

But hey, we’ll all just nod along and pretend this is purely community-driven wisdom and not corporate deniability with extra steps. Carry on :slightly_smiling_face:

Here is the support link to Norton, best of luck, they can give you the inside scoop and hopefully correct your issue. Thanks for allowing me to assist.

You can believe what you want. But what @SoulAsylum notes is correct. We are just users like you that volunteer our time to try to help others from our experience with the Norton products. The best we can do is to escalate threads to Norton when we cannot find a solution.

You can see a few Norton employees around the forums. They have a red Employee or Admin tag by their usernames.
