Norton 360 removal tool

Is the Norton 360 Removal Tool effective?  If it is not should it be removed from the menu.

 It's on this menu.https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20071130124653EN_EndUserProfile_en_us&lg=english&ct=united%20states&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home&layout=Retail&actstat=activated&substatus=current&ncoap=1&&partner=&ispid=&sitename=

Hi Kmoore,

Can I ask why you don't believe the Norton Removal Tool is effective?

It is usually recommended to uninstall via the Control Panel method first,  reboot,  then run the NRT and reboot again.  I hope this helps.

Trying to find help for this guy Nick.

Dave I am trying to help Nick remove his Norton 360.  I thought he had it then he replied back several hours later that the removal tool was still running.

He used the tool designated for 360.  He wants to install his new boxed NIS 2012.

OK.  I would suggest a reboot and try again with the Removal Tool.  It is best to completely remove one product before installing a different product.

Dave.

Thanks for the reply. The last answer there is from some on here.  I'll watch & see how it goes.

I had read somewhere else that the removal tool that was specifically for 360 was not good so when he said it would not run I began to wonder.  I have personally never used the tool that was specifically for 360 removal.

Reallyi the best thing you could do is get the user to come here -- it does not cost anything and you can still help him!

I don't know what the instructions on the tool site say but in the past Norton Staff, names in red, have said to us that we should first uninstall Norton in the normal Windows way (that uses Norotn's script) and then run the NRT a few times with a boot inbetween.

I think that there is not a specific N360 Removal Tool -- the NRT removes nearly all Norton applications and you can't control it -- (although there might be variations for different generations) but that there are specific instructions because they include how to get the replacement you want to install.

Here's the boilerplate I use for people who want the NRT (and/or the NRnRT):

Here is a link to the new Norton Remove & Reinstall tool that, like the older Norton Removal Tool removes most Norton Products from your system, but the newer tool uninstalls the Norton products from your computer and reinstalls the latest version of your Norton security product.

If you already have the latest version of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, or Norton 360, the Norton Remove & Reinstall tool reinstalls the same version of the Norton security product on your computer.

Note that it does not reinstall other Norton products you may have installed -- that you have to do manually and we can point you to the download point for the current versions.

This link Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the older Symantec Norton Removal Tool which can be used if the newer Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool does not fix the problem.

This probably goes to the place used and as you can see if you then click on N 360 it basically gives you things to do before you uninstall and then directs you to the one Norton Removal Tool, not a dedicated one.

I know -- it does not say to uninstall first but that's what we have been told in the past.

However if there has been a partial uninstall that is stopping reinstallation then I don't know what to suggest -- I'll flag this for some more ideas.

He now has a link to this site.  I saw that he had asked a few days ago about removing N360 also and installing another anti virus.

Hopefully he can get past the captcha thing and get it sorted out.

Keith,

Thanks for pointing him here -- can you keep an eye open for him? If you spot him and post a note here I've subscribed to this one so I'll watch for a notification ....

I checked a couple of possibles just in but they don't sound like your description. I'll check in NIS.... nothing there.

Keith,

The 'captcha thing' only lasts for a limited number of posts. If it becomes an impossible barrier to cross have the user send a PM [private message] using the envlope in the upper right corner of the screen to one of the moderators [names listed in bold red letters at the top of the forum] and they can provide assistance.

Hope this helps

I see he got his new product installed.  Thanks for the tips and help.  I have linked others here but made the mistake of thinking he might not come.  And thanks Dick for the captcha tip.

Thanks all,

Keith
