Norton 360 scans deleting windows 7 screen names

Everytime I use the quick or full scan of my Norton 360, that's automatically or manually, I find that all of my screen names have been deleted on my Windows 7 internet explorer pages.

This means I have to log into my BT and AOL emails after each scan. It even deletes my BBC Weather favorite locations lists.

I have tried it with Norton Identity Safe both on and off with no difference. I have experimented and proved that it is without doubt occurring only after any Norton Scan.

I half expect the suggestion of re-installing Norton but thought it wise to ask advise first as, being a novice, I am prone to getting in too deep.

There's a setting to disable the detection and deletion of tracking cookies.

Turn that OFF I think by setting to IGNORE and you should keep your logins working -- had the same experience with Compuserve which is part of AOL.

Don't run any other clean up tools that may delete cookies ...... they aren't harmful anyway.

Hi stephenharryp

To allow selected cookies to be kept and unwanted cookies to be deleted follow the instructions below and use C cleaner to delete cookies.

To ensure that you are only keeping the legitimate cookies, delete all cookies first then visit the websites to collect the cookies by performing the normal tasks on the website so that the only cookies you have are the ones you require.

Disable cookies from Norton scan (NIS) by clicking the Norton icon, click settings, click computer, click computer scans, switch tracking cookies scan to ignore, click apply, click ok.

To set selected cookies to keep in C cleaner click the C cleaner icon, click cleaner button, click options, click cookies, click on cookie to high light use arrow buttons on centre pane to move cookies from one pane to another.

C cleaner has two useful buttons, cleaner and registry the cleaner button doesn’t need a registry backup but the registry button does, use mzbackup before running the registry button.  Cleaning the registry can cause problems so its is best to leave it alone, research on the web for information.

On the left hand pane of the registry user interface there are check boxes that can be unchecked so that the files in these locations will not be affected.

Both are freeware.

intesec,

Why recommend a third party registry backup tool (if that's what mzbackup is) when CCleaner automatically backs up the registry before applying any changes, unless you cancel that option and its prompt.

And IMO cookie cleaning is vastly overrated since as soon as you delete them and return to the site you get them again; if you don't delete them they won't do anything unless you do go back to the site.

Therefore the simplest thing is not to clean them and certainly not on a routine basis.

Thanks to Intesec and Hugh for replies, I have done as suggested and set Norton to ignore tracking cookies with success, so thanks again. I have read a bit on the implications of admitting cookies and it seems fairly safe, I also noticed that my Internet Explorer setting for cookies is at medium and that should stop any nuisance ones.

Steve

Glad it was resolved.

I had the same issue recently when I upgraded to IE10 from IE9.  The Tracking Cookie Removal option was working in my Norton 360 Full Sys Scan with IE9 but it was removing my IE10 usernames/passwords with the new browser version installed.

The gang here provided the fix for me as well.  * thumbs up *

Thanks for letting us know you fixed it.
