Norton 360 update - Text is in Japanese

Hi

I received an email to update my Norton 360.  I downloaded the update, but when it started to update/install, the "click here" buttons and windows were all in Japenese (I think) text.  There was no English.

I wasn't going to click anything that I could not read, so I stopped the installation.

What's going on with this?

Thanks,

Tony

I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN ONLY THE TEXT WAS IN GERMAN.  WHAT IS GOING ON???

Probably fake email. Dont update from emails. Update from within the program or from known good sources. If you run from the email you may end up with no screen as another user has reported in these forums.

I know better, but I clicked through the email.  Then, I stopped the process and clicked through Norton 360.  The same file came through then also.

Same Japanese text.

Thanks,

Tony

Difficult to say really. Maybe some language pointer has changed. Have you rebooted your PC yet?

Lets start with something simple. OPen IE8 , click tools, internet options, under APpearance click languages, What language is listed?

Thanks for the reply.  US English is listed.

I forwarded the email in question to spoof@symantec.com with a question about whether the email was legit or not.

Thanks,

Tony

I forgot to mention this:  Yes, I have re-booted; 2 times actually.

I had Norton 360 run a full scan.  It found nothing.

Thanks again,

Tony

OK. I am not sure where the language pointer for N360 is. So you can either wait for someone else to advise, or uninstall, run Norton Removal Tool twice and reinstall. Hopefully it wont be in Japanese after that.

Hi tonycog,

To get back the English version of Norton 360, you will have to uninstall the Japanese version beforehand and then install the English version. If Norton 360 is the only Norton product on your machine, please use the Norton Removal Tool and follow these instructions:

Depending on which edition of Norton 360 you have got, please download the correct edition of Norton 360 version 4 from the appropriate link below and save it to your computer:

Norton 360 Standard Edition version 4 (English)
http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/N360-ESD-17-5-0-127.exe

Norton 360 Premier Edition version 4 (English)
http://liveupdate.symantec.com/upgrade/N360-PREMIER-ESD-17-5-0-127.exe

You will also need your Norton product key in order to activate Norton 360; during activation, your subscription days will be picked up automatically by Norton 360. You can fetch your product key from your Norton account:
http://www.mynortonaccount.com/
You can also find your product key on the CD sleeve.

I just figured out something that is probably relevant.

I logged into my Norton account online.  When I signed in, I went to a "Products" page that showed that I owned Norton 360 and had the expiratation date for 360.  When I clicked on "Norton 360" I was taken to a page that said the following:

Product Key       XXXXXXX
Product Serial Number     XXXXXXX
Registration Date     Jan 24, 2009
Product Language     Chinese Traditional

I don't know how the Language got changed.  As you can see, I've used this edition of Norton for more than a year and it's never shown up in Chinese.  Can anyone help me change this setting?  Is it in the software?  I'm currently running Norton 360 ver 2.5.0.5 and everything is in English - no Chinese anywhere.

When I've tried (2 times) to install the version 4 update, it comes in Chinese.  Any ideas?

Thanks very much for you time and help,

Tony

I can help you. Notwithstanding which language version of Norton you installed, the product key which you used originates from either Hong Kong, Macau SRP or Taiwan. It is not from China "mainland" i.e. other Chinese regions.

The question - for which I do NOT require an answer - is where did you buy or source the purchase that gave you the Chinese product key. The key is entirely legit in that keys from any country can be used to activate the product is any language in any territory.  The only concern that some folk might have is who is grey importing the product.

You cannot change the setting because it is tied to the product key

Alas I have not myself yet tested what happens when one tries to upgrade.

So in conclusion, do not be concerned, everything is working fine, next time for upgrade simply download direct links to Symantec site.

iF you have not reverted to English version, then the click on the email was a complete or partial upgrade, and you should uninstall and reinstall as another has advised.

Your most welcome. I'm glad it made sense.
