Hi Zana,

Were you able to get any information from the other threads on this site? If not, I would recommend contacting our Customer Support team at the following site:

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks!

Hi Tony :smileyhappy:

I have read the other posts regarding the subject of ...

Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working

Unfortunately!

I found no solution from them.

However...

I have not had that error message now - Since I had to restart the computer on Sunday afternoon.

I have done a couple of little things!

Not sure which one may have helped ... Or if the error message has indeed gone for good

But this is what I did.....

First let me tell you this!

After I had installed Norton 360 for the 3rd time...

I noticed that I had a couple of other problems too!

1/ In Device Manager my Card Reader wasn't working - It had an Exclamation Mark next to it.

2/ When using Media Centre... I now get an error message saying - Intel Alert Service Stopped Working.

Back to what I did....

1/ I reinstalled my 15 in 1 Card Reader

This was the last time I had the Symantec Service error message... When I restarted to reinstall my Card Reader.

2/ I ran Live Update

3/ I ran 2 custom scans...

The first time ....  The scan only ran for approx 40 seconds... Found a Tracking Cookie - Then Stopped!

The second time ....  The scan found Tracking Cookies but continued to run as a Full Scan.

4/ I used Norton to clean Temp Files, History etc..

So Now I'll just have to wait and see if -  Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working

... Comes back again!

Note!

I have emailed Intel about my problem with Media Centre

But from doing a bit of Googling...

Norton always seems to have just been installed when this problem occurs.

Luckily! .... I believe I simply have to update my Intel VIIV software to fix this problem.

Fingers Crossed!

Thanks for you support Tony!

Thanks! Please let us know if you see this problem again.

I've been having a multitude of problems since upgrading to 360 v2 from v1.  I've reformatted my hard drive three times and found that this program interferes with other programs that use .NET Framework.  I never had this problem with 360 v1.  Other programs don't run that also use Framework probably because they are older and use a different version of Framework.

While I prefer 360 v2 over v1, I'm now finding new problems such as sluggish mouse behavior as well as strange behavior with the mouse as if it has a mind of its own such as what I consider the runaway mouse pointer that clicks on things when I'm not even touching it.  I can't figure out if it's some new virus that Norton doesn't recognize or a driver error for the mouse.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, but that didn't work then reformatted the hard drive again.

All of the problems arrived when I installed 360 v2.  It's the only new program I have installed since the problems began.

Hi Tony :smileyhappy:

I guess I spoke too soon! :smileysad:

Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working ............. Is Back!

Just before I shutdown my computer last night .... I looked at the clock - It said 22 : 01

So that's 10 : 01 pm

When I turned on my computer this morning....

I checked in Vista's Problem Reports and Solutions - History

Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working

The time it happened was reported as 22 : 02

So that's 10 : 02 pm

It had to have been in the last few seconds before my computer shutdown.

Since the 3rd Install of Norton 360 v 2....

It only ever happens as I shut the computer down.

I don't actually know it's happened.... Until the next time I switch my computer back on.

I'm not alerted to this problem by Windows or Norton - Because the Computer is almost Off when it happens.

But it still worries me a bit!

It's as though Norton doesn't know how to shutdown properly with the computer :smileysad:

It makes me wonder...

How many people have got this problem with Norton 360 v 2 .... But just don't know they've got a problem.

If I didn't keep checking Vista's Problem Reports and Solutions - History

I wouldn't know I had a problem either :smileyindifferent:

hi whbos - i admire your tenacity, but i'm troubled by the problems you describe. to confirm,

  1. you've reformatted 4x - was this as a result of problems you encountered after installing V2?
  2. you indicated that one of your discoveries from reformats was V2 interferring with programs that use .NET framework - can you talk about that discovery and the programs?
  3. can you confirm that the mouse behavior is always after reinstalling V2 following a reformat?

sorry for all the questions but you have an intriguing problem. last question - have you encountered the error "Symantec Service Framework stopped working" or any other specific error message?

Hi whbos :smileyhappy:

I'm sorry I cant help with your Norton 360 v 2 problems :smileysad:

I can't even fix my Own!

But as for your mouse problem....

If your using Vista - Check in - Ease of Access ....

To make sure you haven't activated your mouse to open windows, programs etc....

By hovering your mouse over things rather than having to click on them.

Start

Control Panel

Ease Of Access

Ease Of Access Center

Make the mouse easier to use

Then check the settings!

Hope this helps!

Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working ............. Is Back!

Hi Zana,

Since this issue has returned, it may be best to contact our Customer Support team:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

Thanks!

mel:

1)  All of the reformats were a result of problems after installing N360 v2.  The mouse problem didn't happen until I later installed the add-on pack after the second thru fourth reformats.

2)  Having reformatted my drive many times for unrelated reasons such as slowness, I've learned that it is best to install older programs first so their common files don't overwrite newer ones.  The one old program that v2 interferes the most with is Roxio's Easy Media Creator (I think it is version 7 and it is about 4-5 years old).  If this program is installed before v2, I get an error message when trying to load the program.  I don't remember exactly what it said, but it was something related to .NET Framework.  Roxio's EMC loads Framework 1.1 on my computer when it installs.

I would upgrade this program, but the new version does not appeal to me since I only use the "Creator Classic" program in the package.  They don't seem to have anything comparable to it in their new version, or if they do I haven't been able to find it on their online product page.  I also do not use any of the other programs that come in the complete package since I have high-end programs that do the same thing.

Another is a genealogy program called The Master Genealogist (TMG) Version 7.  I have the latest version which was just patched.  It also used .NET Framework which was listed in the error message before I applied the patch.  Besides frequent error messages and crashes, the program would not close.  I had to use the Task Manager in Windows XP to close the program out.  After applying the patch to TMG, the error messages and problems went away.

Then I realized I hadn't installed the add-on pack to N360 v2.  When I did that, the crazy mouse problems started and TMG (updated with patch) was going back to it's old problem of not closing properly (had to use the Task Manager).

When I removed the add-on pack for N360, the problems in TMG went away and it closes properly now.  I complained at the TMG website about this problem, but obviously it wasn't this program's fault.  The fault lies with the add-on pack which I didn't realize until yesterday when I uninstalled it thanks to other threads here.

3)  The mouse behavior started after the second reformat and reinstall.  I cannot attest to the fact that it is either N360 v2 or the add-on pack, only that after uninstalling the add-on pack yesterday it seems to be gone.  It is mostly noticeable when on sites where you have to fill in a form or respond to threads like this one.

You start to fill in the form and the mouse takes on a mind of it's own and returns to a previous webpage completely destroying any information that was already entered.  It also clicks on ad graphics and opens sites I didn't select.  I thought it was a virus which is why I reformatted the fourth time.  I almost made it a fifth time until I uninstalled the add-on pack.  It hasn't happened since and didn't happen while I was typing this message.

I planned to get a new mouse because of this problem in case it is the mouse.  My computer is old (purchased in mid-2002), running Windows XP Home, 3+ GB ram, all Windows service packs and updates, and Norton 360 up to date.  Everything was working smoothly until I upgraded from v1 to v2.

I haven't received the specific error "Symantec Service Framework stopped working" at least not within N360.  If I received it in the two programs listed above, I don't remember and didn't write it down.

Zana:

I'm still using Windows XP Home because my experience with Vista is--I hate it!  At least the Home version.  I also think my computer would be too slow to run it.  It's slow now with the memory-hogging software I have on it (graphics and video editing software).

I had an instructor in college tell me that working with the mouse is like working with a brick and he is right.

Tony:

I clicked on your link, but if the problem isn't listed then it takes you to Chat.  Having to explain this to someone in Chat would probably not be much help and be too confusing.  Is there a link to report possible bugs online or email?

Last time I got on Chat I got someone in India who tried to access my computer without permission and I quickly closed the session.  You never know who's trying to hack into your computer these days.  I didn't want it more screwed up than it already was.  This person also didn't seem to understand English very well.  So Chat...forget it.

Hi Tony  :smileyhappy:

I'm sorry I have to say this...  But I have agree with whbos :smileysad:

From past experience with Norton 360 v 1 and my old XP computer ....

I know that there is just no point in contacting Symantec support.

A complete waste of time!

They read from a scrip, repeatedly ask the same question, treat you like your stupid,

and make you do the same things over and over again.

Also..

If you ask them a question they weren't expecting, because it's not in their scripts / Notes .... They Cut You OFF :smileymad:

Even worse!

They say things like... " I promise what I do will definitely solve your problem " .... And it doesn't!

They start doing something to your computer - Then cut you Off! - Leaving you in a worse mess.

They do things to your computer - And tell you... " See I have fixed your problem "

...Even though it's very obvious they haven't

And you know the old XP I mentioned?

well it was actually only 12 months old

I'd been using Norton Internet security 2006 for the first 12 months.

Then I tried to install Norton 360 v 1

Many hours I spent with Symantec support - Most of them waiting in a queues :smileymad:

And with the help of Symantec Support .... Plus numerous Installs / Uninstalls of 360 v 1

My 1 year old XP got in such a mess ........ It Died! :womansad:

Sorry Tony!

But there is No Way I'll contact Support

Thanks Anyway!

Not to bad mouth the Chat people, but Zana is right.  They are going by a script.  They do ask you what your problem is even though you've typed it in.  Either they can't read, don't understand English, or are just plain stupid.  No offense, but Chat is usually only good for small problems.  I also don't like dealing with a foreign country when I live in the U.S.  If they don't know the answer, they have to go to a "higher authority" to get it and even then it doesn't fix the problem.

I've been a Norton user since the 1980's and this is the last time I upgrade Norton 360.  Even though version 2 is better than version 1, version 1 worked without any problems.  Since I had to upgrade to renew my subscription ($20 difference between upgrade and renew--not much difference in my opinion) I wonder if I can either use the version 2 serial number for version 1 to keep my subscription or dump version 2 all together and just credit it toward my version 1 subscription.  My opinion is that any software company that incorporates Microsoft's dot NET Framework into their programs is asking for trouble.  Just ask the people at The Generations Network (TGN) who produced Family Tree Maker version 2008 (do a search).  I'd rather go back to older versions of Norton protection software and pay a subscription.  This software is flawed!

Less than a week before my subscription was about to run out, I was given the option to upgrade to version 2.  I took the bait and tried it.  I liked the new features, but had the same problems (except with the mouse).  I complained for good reason and still didn't want to upgrade because Norton 360 v2 was interfering with other programs.  I was given a free 30-day extension and then upgraded before the end of that extension thinking that maybe the upgrade download would fix the problem.  It didn't.

I can continue to use version 2 since it seems to be working, but I cannot install the add-on stuff since it appears to be the problem, or N360 v2 is also part of the problem.  I forgot to add that I was having problems with Firefox and blamed it on that browser, but it could have been a problem with N360 v2 and the add-on since they were added last during a few of my reformats.

By the way, since typing this message it keeps scrolling upwards.

I should have purchased Norton SystemWorks (if still available) and the Personal Firewall.  You can keep Norton 360.

hi whbos - you must be a researcher during the day :smileywink: , because that is as comprehensive and detailed report as i have ever seen, and i commend your tenacity. i'm not really a big fan of .NET either but it does appear to be becoming more prominent all the time, but i think the problem you describe - the ordering of the install from oldest to newest - represents the crux of the problem; backward compatability. the fact that the mouse issue cleared after removing the add-on pack seems pretty conclusive - what kind of mouse are you using, anyway (and do you install the driver for it)?

anyway, i hope someone here helps (hint, hint) get you back on V1 - sounds like it was much better in your environment.

Mel:

My mouse is the cheap Sony VAIO model that came with my VAIO computer.  $2,500 computer with junk hardware.  I uninstalled the mouse driver and reinstalled it, so that didn't help.  The mouse seems to be working okay now.  The small problem I had within these forums could be a result of the forum program itself.  After all it's a beta.  I do like a lot of the features in this forum though.

I've got the same "Framework Stopped Working" problem with Norton 360 2.0 in Vista Home Premium SP1, and I've never installed any Add-On pack. I get the same Windows crash message with all the same parameters except for the ones at the bottom of the page that are specific to a particular computer. I use a Logitech Wheel Mouse plugged into USB 2.0. I have done all the live updates and scans successfully, but the fault still happens randomly. Today it has been okay so far, but the fault happened right after I send a long form email to Support last night. I'm suspicious of  MSL.DLL as possibly being infected. See http://www.google.com/search?q=msl.dll

I waited over 30 minutes last night for chat help with 0 ahead of me, but finally bailed and sent a detailed email rant instead. If hear back before next year I'll be surprised, and even more surprised if they offer a solution. It's been computer hell week for me.

When the fault occurs, Eudora is blocked from checking email, though it can send mail okay. I also suspect that antivirus protection is shut down after the fault, which is why email is blocked.

Anybody got a clue?

I neglected to paste in the detailed error message that results when the fault happens. Here it is:

hi NWilson - since your versions of ccSVChst and msl.dll appear to match (107.0.5.5), and no add-on pack, i think we're in uncharted waters. folks indicating this problem appear to be reporting the problem with either external storage and/or during the scanning of particular file or file types. you can test whether AV is still working when this crashes, try an EICAR test (more info at http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm.)

if you think you might have a threat, however, try the steps here

i've also noticed the email correlation in these threads as well (specifically when add-on pack is not installed). can you talk about your upgrade path to V2? did you come from V1 or a 2007 or 2008 product? some users have indciated success using Add/Remove and then the removal tool - might be worth a shot.
