Norton 360 V2 2.5.0.5 backup status indicators don't work on 3 PC's

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here but have been using norton software for quite some time.

I recently noticed that the backup status indicators have stopped working. Backup itself is still working normally.

Before contacting symantec support I was wondering if anyone out here knows what the problem might be.

I have norton 360 installed op three computers (2x vista premium, 1x XP professional) and the three computers are reacting in the same way (it used to work but it doesn't anymore , backup itself still works fine)

Thanks for all the tips.

Kind regards

RHE

RHE,

Are you talking about the overlay icons that signify that a file has been backed up?  Or some other indicator?

bk

Hello

Yes, I'm talking about the overlay icons that tell you whether or not a file has been backed up, or is ready to be backed up.

Perhaps the confusion is because I have norton 360 in dutch language and there they call it statusindicators.

Thanks again

RHE

RHE,

It is possible to disable them in a couple ways. Is it possible the checkbox on the settings page or the backup configurations page was un-checked at some point?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I checked that before posting, the checkbox on the settings page is checked.

It doesn't matter, checked or uncheked.... no overlay icons anymore

thank you

R.

For any reason such as the work around for the shell causing program issues would you have unregistered the backup shell dll?

Mike

Waw, these are quick answers, thanks for that

I must say I know a little bit about computers but I didn't unregister bushell.dll or any other dll even though I am aware that these things circulate on the internet to solve some backup problems.

I'm hoping this doesn't have to lead to reinstalling norton or to upgrading to 3.0

Thanks for your effort.

Rony

Are you aware that the upgrade to 3 is generally free?

Yes, I'm just finshed chatting with a symantec employee, and he suggests the same, upgrading to 3.0. He says it's not a generally known issue in 2.0 though. I say it's not a computer issue neither since I notice this on three different computers. One of then is seldomly used.

I'll try the upgrade and let you know the result.

Thanks to everyone who was so kind to assist me.

Rony

RHE,

I am trying to narrow down where the issue lies. Can you confirm if you see the right click context menu's to include/exclude files when you right click a file?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I can confirm that the context menu (add to backup, exclude from backup, scan now) is still there and it still works.

If you want me to wait a while before performing the ugrade, i'll be happy to wait.

Rony

RHE,

It would be best if you used your free upgrade. If you still see the issue I will continue to figure out what is happening as soon as you finish the upgrade. There were a lot of speed enhancements in the icon overlay code essentially changing how they function. I think upgrading is going to correct the issue.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi again,

I just installed v3.0 on one PC and yes, the overlay indicators are back.

I would consider to continue using 3.0 but I can't activate this version with my key.

It says that activation can't be done because it exceeds the maximum number of PC's allowed.

That is correct, I had norton 2.0 running on three pc's (max 3 allowed)

But the computer I installed 3.0 is one of those three pc's so I'm still not exceeding the max allowed number of pc's

Does anyone know how to deactivate one of my three pc's or should I reinstall 2.0 ?

Shouldn't Symantec see (MAC address) that it's the same pc ?

Thanks

Don't worry anymore.

This problem is solved.

The overlay indicators are back and a very kind symantec employee has reset my key so I could activate this version.

My first impression is that this version has better facilities regarding backups.

Thanks to everyone
