Norton 360 V2 - don't tell me it's less intrusive

Having installed Norton 360 V2, I find a Norton icon in my Windows Explorer right-click menu. V1 didn't do this.

 

This seems to me a violation of elementary software etiquette. You just don't clutter people's explorer menus, toolbars, quick launch bars etc without asking. So many programs want to add their great little icons to these places and if I let them, I need to buy a bigger screen every 3 months. I have nothing against them in principle, and I let some programs install them, but please, let me decide if I want them.

That's precisely the point. Many people will like this option. But many other people won't. Please let me decide what's good for me.
Lots of software products can add items to the explorer context menu that "many people will find convenient". But very few will just do it without asking because they understand that people don't want to end up with dozens of these extensions.
I know it's a small point. But unfortunately it's not an isolated one. The software takes too many decisions for me.

i don't disagree with the basic premise and i'd like to see better configuration options available at install that allow you to manage these... sadly everyone does it and it has become something of a defacto standard. i personally like the one for winrar and use it quite often, but the rest are significantly less useful. i've taken to managing and a lot of other annoying items using autoruns. i highly recommend it with the proviso that you can create problems for yourself if you use it recklessly :womanvery-happy:

 

as to the larger question of software making too many decisions, in the security realm, i'm not sure i agree that this is a bad thing. this example is not a stellar one, but in general, folks i support will generally make the wrong choice when presented with two options.

True but all versions of Norton AntiVirus that I can remember using, including Norton Internet Security, did put that entry in the context menu and it is useful when you run across a single file, folder or even document you want to check before opening.

 

My big problem is that there seems to be a conflict between this entry by Norton 360 and my PowerDesk 7 which is a file manager that ironically will remind people of Norton Desktop for Windows of loved memory <s>

Interesting. I actually quit using v1 because it couldn't be used to scan individual files or folders so on this issue I for one feel exactly the opposite.:smileyhappy:

Well, I’m not sure whether v2.0 is less intrusive or not, but It’s faster, more customizable, organized and easier to use than the previous version :smileywink:

Context menus have been an integral part of Symantec software for years. While it may not have been included with v1 of 360, it has been in almost every version of NAV and NIS.

 

While there is no configuration option to remove these, you can do so by changing some system settings. I will not provide the link as it is a very advanced procedure for home users and uses system utilities that could be damaged if you edit the wrong things.

 

I can tell you, however, that you will find guides on how to manage the context-menu entries in Windows XP featured on any search engine. I'd also like to note that I am telling you that it can be done as a personal comment - this may not reflect the views of Symantec or its partners.  Always create a backup before making system-wide changes and if you are in doubt either seek advice from an experienced power user or do not touch settings at all.
