Norton 360 v20: How to restore files from Backup created on another PC

Norton 360 v20:

How can I restore specific files from Backup sets that were created and managed via a different PC?

In my example:

I have been using Norton 360 to backup files from my PC to an external drive.

My PC hard drive failed, was rebuilt and Norton 360 was re-installed.

Now I want to restore files from that the original external drive to my rebuilt PC.

However... (the problem is) Norton backup does not see the existing backup sets on the external drive.

The rebuilt machine has Norton 360 installed (as before).

The external drive with Norton previously backed up files is connected via USB.

I find what I believe are the backup folders on the external drive:

Top folder = F:\RAY-PC\Backup Set 2010-12-08 185923

Within that folder is a "Catalogs" folder and 600+ folders with similar names, example: 'Backup Files 2013-02-16 222118"

Within each of these folders is a compressed folder named "Backup files 1" (which contains more folders, etc)

The few I checked are in the 5-10MB size range.  The size seems reasonable.

I can open N360; select Backup; Restore Files; View All; and then select Refresh List (in blue) and see

1 selection, named "Ray on F:", 143 files, etc (which is the name of the **new** backup I just created minutes ago).

[I created this *new* backup set because N360 Restore function was not even selectable until I created a new backup set.]

What I hoped to see (but do not) is anything that looks like the previous backup set named "RAY-PC".

Hello again rkgorton.

I am puzzled and intrigued by your response which makes me think that I cannot help.  What you are seeing is nothing like what I would have expected.

When N360 backup creates a backup set, I thought it always put it in a directory called N360_BACKUP in the root of the relevant drive.  Then the actual backup set is a folder, not called anything like "RAY-PC" or "Default Set" but, something like {9AB5473C-0624-414B-B53E-0185FDECE599}.  The backup set is only seen with a name like "RAY-PC" or "Default Set" when looked at via Norton backup/restore software.  So unless the Norton backup system has changed dramatically since 2010 when you seem to have done the backup you refer to, it does not look like a Norton backup to me.

Can you find the "Ray on F" backup that you have just created?  I would expect it to be in a N360_BACKUP folder in the root of the drive and that in there will be a single folder with a name in the form of  {9AB5473C-0624-414B-B53E-0185FDECE599} and a date stamp that matches when you made the "Ray on F" backup.

I am puzzled by those folder names too. I suspect the latest backup software uses a different folder structure than was used in 2010. Yes -- the N360_BACKUP folder was created this time (when using the latest backup sw version).  Your questions got me digging around in the old folders and I am starting to think I will be able to manually find the files I am looking for. So it’s less of a panic for me at the moment J. I have also submitted my questions to the Norton Support folks, but still waiting for a response. I will let you know if I learn anything useful.  Thanks for your help!

Good luck.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.
