I am a Computer tech and have recently run into some issues with Norton 360 on 3 different PC's but the same problem.
Network details: Broadband cable modem connected to Netgear 4 port wireless router with wep security.
PC1 was a netbook and required a reformat. Installed Norton after the reformat and couldnt get internet connection. Tried disabling firewalls and disabling Norton with no help. I then tried changing my network settings on the netbook to a static IP address 192.168.1.17 for example and the net worked fine. As soon as the customer took the PC home she had no internet connection (Obviously not a netgear router) so i suggested over the phone that she change her settings back to auto and she still cant connet. A site visit is needed to configure her netbooks static IP to her particular router/network setup. This was reformatted with windows XP Pro.
Last night i had a desktop and a Notebook that both were ok and needed Norton 360 to be installed as previous versions had expired. Norton uninstalled and installed fine but have the same issues with net connections. Again changing to a static ip address got them online ok. Desktop was running XP Pro and Notebook is running Windows 7.
The problem is most people i do work for have not got a clue on how to get into their routers or configure their ip address and neither should they as Norton should be fine on auto dns settings.
I have been an avid Norton user for the past 10-15 years and love the improvements over the years but am slightly annoyed at the above issue as it should be a painless experience to install Norton and update definitions and activate the product. This at this stage can only be done once static IP address have been assigned.
V3.2... something was the one that was sold to me (PC not here so cant confirm the exact version number). I tried turned the firewall off on Norton and windows, havent looked at permission yet but really shouldnt have to. Image being a complete noob, go out and buy this product, go home and expect to just simply install and it should work.
Someone who just uses their PC for facebook and email wouldnt understand and probably wouldnt even look any further than the icon in their start bar.
As stated above have relligiously used and recommended Norton for years and the only other time I have had an issue was mainly with Norton blocking other PC's on the network untill you changed the network settings from shared to Fully Trust.
The 3 instances above were from 2 different purchases 1 being a standalone copy and the other being a 3 user copy.
The first instance was a clean install and after assigning a static address it was able to update the definitions, so I am assuming if this issue is with Norton changing something to do with the DHCP than a hot fix would have already been applied during the definitions update.
