After upgrading to Norton 360 version 22.5.0.124, I could not connect any devices through my local router to the Internet. The router was providing Wi-Fi connectivity to my phone, TV etc. All traffic was blocked. My phone couldn't even get an IP address. The immediate test solution is to turn the Norton firewall off (for a very short time) and try the devices again. As soon as I did that, my phone got an IP address and could access the internet without problems. The same for my TV.
After 5 hours on a chat session with Norton Techs, they finally found a solution that worked. It involves creating a new Traffic Rule for the Firewall.
Here is what to do:
- Open the Norton 360 app (click on the icon in the running apps window)
- Click on settings at the top right of that page.
- Click on “Firewall” on the left.
- Now you should be on the Firewall page with the headings “General Settings” ….. “Traffic Rules”. Click on Traffic Rules
- Now click on “Add”
- You will go through a series of pages – “Action … Connections …” etc. Most of the defaults are correct, but just in case I’ll repeat them:
- Action = Allow
- Connections = to and from
- Computers = Any computer
- Communications = All
- Advanced = If Explicitly requested
- Description = any name you want. I left it as Firewall Rule 1
- When you have created the rule, make sure it is at the top of the rule list. If it isn’t, click on it (it won’t change colour) and click on “Move Up” until it is.
- Click Apply then close
You can close the Norton page too.
This seems to work and the tech says it does not weaken our protection.
