NB: Please make sure that you have the latest updates from Windows.
There is a correction for the above suggestion. It may not work since the issue is with external drive. It works only with CD/DVD drive issues. I apologize. Thanks to Yogesh for pointing this out.
You can try the following:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. In the details pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Modify.
4. In the Value data box, type PartMgr, and then click OK.
5. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
Make sure that you take a backup of Windows Registry before you perform the above steps.

Just renewed Norton 360 version 4.0 about 6 weeks ago. About 3 weeks ago my computer crashed (laptop and out of town) and I could not get it to turn on. When I got home I tried again and when my fix it competer program came up I started checking their list from the bottom and up, came Norton with all kinds of risks flagged and an error code of 3047.53. I got all of it cleaned up and my computer starting working again. For a few days Norton was advising me every few minutes that risks had been handled. Everything went well until today. My computer crashed again and I could not get it started. Finally I was able to get to Norton and guess what--THE SAME THING WAS HAPPENING. It also seems that I am not covered during these crashes. There is no notice from Norton prior to the computer turning off. I have had Norton for a few years and never had a problem. I have Norton on 2 computers so it is double the time and trouble to clear both of them. From some of the posts I saw from others, it seems that there might be a problem with Norton 360 version 4.0 . HELP! Whats going on?
It seems to be working now - will see what happens in a few weeks. Also, do I now have to run both programs separately or have they integrated together? In the past my experience with Norton was that it just automatically did its thing and I didn't have to worry about it. Has version 4.0 changed this? I'm not very happy with it at this point.
Thanks
Hello FancyJ
Have you run Live Update enough times to get to 4.3.0.5? That is the latest version of N360. What 2 programs do you mean? The antivirus updates and the other updates should come thru on their own if your computer is kept on.
Hi FancyJ,
I did not get " Also, do I now have to run both programs separately or have they integrated together? "
Norton 360 4.0 has liveupdate component in itself and it will download Product as well as Protection updates for your computer.
As for you system crashes, you may need to check the event log for more info.
Cheers!
