Norton 360 vs. Seagate ext. Drive

My son installed an ext drive and set it for auto backups.  It is showing that all Norton stuff is an error.  Will Norton not back up on external drive?

Why does Norton's 'background in progress' window stay up forever and I can't get rid of it?

Should I turn off the 360 back up?

I'm having mixed success with an external hard drive for backups also.  It was working just fine for months.  Now it sporadically doesn't recognize the external hard drive while everything else in the operating system does recognize the ext. hard drive.  I can't backup using manual or automatic.  The only solution from tech support is to reinstall N360 which gets tedious.

I'm running 64 bit Vista

I have XP v3.  I'm wondering if my problem would go away if I could dismantle the 360 backup.  I don't plan on extending it after this first year of free back up.  Can the 360 backup be turned off?

I have found sometimes that if I plug in my USB ext. drive for backup while PC is running, sometimes it doesn't show on the 'Where' page.

But it appears, after  I click on the 'Refresh' link, near the top of the 'where' page.
