Norton 360 will not install properly

I bought a Compaq Presario today and a copy of Norton 360 v3.0.  I inserted the CD and entered the product registration key.  I then got a message that an earlier version (meaning the trial version that was pre-installed) is being deleted.  I was then asked to re-boot, which I duly did.  I was then returned to the message saying that a previous version is being deleted.  Then re-boot and so on, ad infinitum.  I tried uninstalling Norton from Control Center, but nothing works.  I also receive a warning from Windows that no Antivirus software can be detected, which is bizarre, since that is precisely what I am trying to install.
