Norton 360 won't open!

Hi all,

My Norton is still running as it is still in the taskbar but when i click it or even go to open it from the Start menu, it does not launch at all , even though my pointer is showing that it is loading.

I've tried to go to add/remove programs to change or try to fix the problem but it's saying it cannot do it because Live Update is running (when in fact, it is not).

I am not using another internet security  program so this is not the problem and i have tried restarting the computer.

Any ideas?

:(

What error message are you seeing?  If it is "C:\Program Files\Norton 360 Edition\Engine\3.0.0.135\uiStub.exe.  The specified path does not exist" then I had the same problem.

I went to Norton Support and a Tech logged into my machine and appeared to sort the problem straightaway by switching off "Norton Tamper Protection" (in Settings) and deleting uiStub.exe from the list of running progams using Task Manager.  He said (via chat) that the problem can occur if the machine shuts down unexpectedly.

However, it turns out he hasn't really fixed the problem because if you switch the Norton Tamper Protection back on again, the problem returns.

I presume that this is a workaround for some sort of bug in Norton 360 Version 3 but having been quite impressed by the Norton support, I am considerably less impressed now because he wasn't honest about fixing the problem.

I would be interested to hear from a Norton tech what the situation is with this problem.  What is causing it and will a proper fix be issued that will allow me turn on the Norton Tamper Protection again.

Thanks.

This is one of the reasons I don't upgrade to newer versions for quite some time after there release ....... I hate it when a stable program suddenly becomes a right pain !

I waited a good while before upgrading to version 2 and new of some of the pitfalls from readng around the internet.

Anyway, back to this problem:

Have you tried getting norton to open by going to its entry in the all programs list off the start menu and right click on it and choose "run as administrator" , just in case something has gone amiss with admin rights etc.

Please Run the Norton Removal Tool twice-in-a-row and then re-install your Norton Product, that is, use the Norton Removal Tool, Re-Start, then use the N.R.T. again and Re-Start.  Please then let us know if this Solves your Issue.  Also, what Version of Norton 360 are you using?  And don't worry, a Web Page should come up after using the Norton Removal Tool to Re-Install your Norton Product.

I hadn't realised that it was so new - my old licence expired and I just came along and renewed/upgraded.   As I have administrator rights, I don't think it is a rights problem.  Also, uistub.exe starts fine if you switch off this tamper thing so I think it is some sort of snafu in Norton

@Floating__Red.     I am using Norton 360 Version 3.   This is clearly a known problem as the Norton Tech was able to ‘fix’ it straightaway.  Why didn’t he suggest your approach as a solution?   And even if I do reinstall Norton, what is to prevent the problem reoccuring (I have only had Version 3 installed for 1 day)?

Sorry RCollings, I should have been a bit clearer ..... the part of my post about trying run as admin was meant for the original poster.

I'm glad to hear that apart from the adjustment you have had to make things are ok ..... hopefully this will be fixed in an update as you shouldn't have to keep this option unchecked.

It is also worth knowing that this particular setting (the tamper one) can also stop windows system restore from working correctly and so you would uncheck this option before performing a restore of your system.

Enable again after you are done restoring.

Some of the other Norton programs have a setting such as "protect my symantec product" which does the same and needs to be temporarily unchecked.

Just thought I would mention this :smileywink:

Norton Product Tamper Protection does Protect your Norton Products and should be Checked at all times except as a short-term solution.

I agree.   That’s why I was unhappy with the solution implemented by the Norton Tech.  However as it is clearly a known problem and they didn’t suggest your approach of reinstalling, I am assuming either this won’t work; or if it does,  the problem is likely to come back again.  It looks to me like a bug of some sort.  Have you seen it reported anywhere else?

In fact, on reflection,  this problem may have been present in the original install as this was the first time I tried to start Norton 360 directly.   Just to repeat my question, Floating_Red,  is there any evidence that reinstalling Norton 360 Version 3 as you describe will fix this particular problem.

Hi rcollings,

Did you try the steps provided below?

1. Back up the Registry by creating a restore point.

Use the following document to get the steps to backup the registry.

Backing up the Windows registry in Windows Vista/XP

2. Click Start > Run (For Windows Vista, click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run)

3. In the Run dialogue box, type regedit and click OK.

4. Navigate to and select HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify.

5.  Delete both IconStreams and PastIconStream in the right pane.

6. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select Start Task Manager.

7. Select the Processes tab, choose explorer.exe, and click End Process.

8. Choose the Applications tab, click New Task, enter explorer.exe in the text box, and press Enter.

Let us know how it goes..

You may have had a Bad Install.  Make sure all windows are Closed before trying the re-install and let us know how it goes.

Hi Vineeth.   I haven't tried this.  Is it a known fix for this problem?

Thanks

Richard

Yes Rich, I've seen these steps resolving many cases. Please try this and let me know how it goes.

Vineeth--

Jade have you had any luck with your problem?

Sorry, Vaneeth.  When you say it solves many problems,  have you seen this registry change fix this specific problem with this specific message.  Can you explain how it fixes the problem?   I am always reluctant to fiddle with the registry without understanding what it is that I am doing.

Hi Vineeth.  I tried your suggestion in the end because I had the problem of the Norton 360 icon not appearing in the System Tray after a restart and it looked like your solution would fix this (without needing to reboot).   Which it did.  However, it didn't fix my original problem (which I wasn't particularly surprised about).

General observation:  without wishing to seem  ungrateful, it is helpful to know whether a proprosed fix is known to fix the specific problem being reported.   Something like:  "I haven't seen your specific problem being reported before but the following has fixed a range of issues and might be worth trying... "

All of a sudden now, I can't open Norton 360 v5.0. On the logo on the taskbar, it shows the norton logo but instead of a red X or orange exlamation mark, it shows a grey circle with a white slash through it. I can't open it or run scans and the toolbar on internet explorer says subscription expired, when it's supposed to expire in January. It also says the firewall is disabled and I can only run Norton's full scan in safe mode. Is there anything I can do 'cause I used all my serial key's so I'm reluctant to try to re-install Norton. Thanks
