hi,
i did a search on this site and found this thread, as I am having the same problem with my laptop. I tried downloading the file and opening it, but the spyware blocks it from operating. It also blocks a cmd shell from opening, and blocks the task manager window from opening. I tried rebooting in safe mode, but then i am unable to manually find the files that need to be removed - i have been at this all day long and really urgently need to remove this malware. Does anyone have another suggestion in light of this new information?
thanks,
janelle

1. Download Hijackthis with the clean system, if not able to on the infected PC) from here http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Download the version 2.0.2 executable on the right hand side ( Not the Installer)
Before Transfering, or just needing to rename "Hijackthis.exe" to "Hijackthis.com" then transfer to your desktop of the infected machine, run and save a log.
Other names you could rename Hijackthis to are or should be,
iexplore.exe
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
firefox.exe
Then post the Log back here

Hello!

i then rebooted and logged into regular mode, as it looked like malwarebytes had removed the malware, but ivista guardian was still there. This is when I saw you post and followed the instructions you provided. Here is the logfile from Hijackthis:

I gave the instuctions for the first step only,
ADDON:
This is the entry to check (tick)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [vwxbixpf] C:\Users\Janelle\AppData\Local\gvvrfn\ptibsftav.exe
Then click "Fix Checked" Hijackthis should remove that registry entry.
Now restart the PC
Malwarebytes still may not be able to update its database, but the Rogue should not have loaded on the restart

so -
that worked and the malware did not open after log in, but what do i need to do to remove the rest of it?

Does Malwarebytes not update its definition file, Can't reach the server to download??
Depending on how you installed Malwarebytes and how you got it to work also.
Quads
it cant update. it gives an error code 732 (12029, 0)
and it says to report the error code to thier anti malware support team :(

Some Malware like Rogues and Trojans change your Internet settings to block things or for its own use
IE, Chrome, Messenger, Skype and a few other programs can have the same problem
Open IE and on the menu: "Tools", "Internet Options" (Can be accessed via the "Control Panel")
Select the "Connections tab",
Depending on your connection type Make sure it is unchecked /unticked in both the "settings" button and "LAN Settings" button,
UNCHECK / UNTICK, "Use a proxy server for your LAN" or "Use a proxy server for this connection...................."
Click OK both windows.
You may have to have "Automatically detect settings" checkbox ticked. Depending on your previous settings that are needed.
Restart the program(s) and maybe even the PC
From Within Chrome
Adjust your proxy settings
Click the "Tools" menu.
Select "Options".
Click the "Under the Hood" tab.
Click "Change proxy settings".
The it's the same as above from "connections" tab onwards.

i reainstalled it in safe mode with networking, and it seemed to run okay, it caught a number of trojans, but it won't update for some reason.
okay cool, i fixed the IE connections... are the instructions for firefox similar?
changing the connection settings worked, thank you! Malwarebytes successfully updated and i am running an in depth scan now.
Should this get it all?
Also ( not sure if you can answer this) is there a reason that Norton's did not catch this? It's always caught everything before, this shakes my confidence in the product a bit.
thank you so so much for your assistance! :)

The Internet Options in Windows is used by a lot of programs to access the net, but some don't
By changing the settings to use a Proxy but leaving the actual settings for that blank basically haves you going nowhere, for Programs including Security Software Updating.
No Security Software is 100% especially if you get infected really early on, then of course if Norton is not able to update either, like Malwarebytes
You should run a Full Scan in Normal Mode not just in Safe Mode.
Quads
yes, running a full scan now in regular mode. Hopefully this will scrub the rest of the ick out.
thank you again!
janelle :)
