Norton Antispam works intermittantly with Outlook and Outlook Express

I have a problem where Norton Antispam works intermittantly with Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express.  Sometimes it's there, the button and the service and other times it's not there and the button is gone.  However, during all of it, the spam folders remain.  Anyone experiencing this?  Is there a fix for it?

Version: 19.2.0.10

When this issue happens, are one of the email clients opened, and you are starting the other one? Or is it happening total randomly when you open eg. only one at the same time?

Actually drops out on only Outlook Express.  Usually, I never have both programs open at the same time.

Please run Live Update manually, an update was released (version 19.5). It is possible it contains some fixes that can solve this issue as well.

The update requires two reboots.

Let us know the results.

Will do.

Update didn't fix problem.  Now running on 19.5.0.145

I'm having the same problem, as are many, many others, from a quick glance at the comments on the Internet.

I've about had it with this Norton NIS--I've spent about four hours in the past few days trying to get the 2012 installed and running properly, with the Support folks taking control of my computer. This has included completely removing existing Norton files, reinstalling 2012, trying to figure out where the Norton Toolbar was in Firefox (turns out that with just about every Firefox version update, the Norton Toolbar loses compatibility (or the other way around).

Anyway, the suggested fix for the disappearing Anti-Spam button in Outlook Express doesn't last very long before it disappears again. This problem goes back a few years, as far as I can tell, so it's nothing new with 2012. In my NIS 2011, I didn't bother activating the Anti-Spam, as Verizon's function was quite good. That's changed; Verizon's is now somewhat erratic, so I wanted the Norton to do the job. Fail!

I have the sense that Norton' unresponsiveness to certain recurring problems and customer complaints is going to catch up with them, much as their slowness to respond to issues with resource hogging cost them a huge number of customers several years ago. I, in fact left Norton behind several years ago, and only came back after hearing things had improved. Now, I don't know.

Welcome,

You didn't mention what security product you were using prior to installing NIS. Did you use their removal tools to uninstall it?

Thanks

Hi, and thanks for your response--

I was using NIS 2011 previously.

When I called Support, the woman took control of my computer and, if I recall, used Norton's removal tool. I do know that she removed the program, reinstalled it, and discovered that it DID replace the Anti-Spam button in OE. However, the other problem I was having was that Norton Safe Search was not functioning, and THAT was not fixed. Her response to that was to try and revert my Mozilla to version 8 (from 9), but I stopped her from doing so, commenting that I would rather keep the current version and wait till Safe Search compatibility was established,  which usually lags behind each Mozilla release.

The day before, when I was first trying to install NIS 2012, I had to call because I was unable to configure the Full System Scan feature. During that call, the rep couldn't figure it out either, so HE did an uninstall which wiped out all traces of my Norton settings. Annoying, especially since after a reinstall he STILL couldn't figure out why the scan configuration couldn't be resolved.

A little background: According to the instructions on the "About These Settings" page, "You can use the Configure option to schedule the Full System Scan. The problem is, unlike many of the settings that DO have a link that says "Configure", there WAS no such option (link) to do so. So, after completely uninstalling my data, with no resulting success at solving the problem, he went to the main page and clicked on Scan Now > Custom Scan > Edit, and, lo and behold, there was the screen allowing scan settings for day, time and other specifics. In NIS 2011, the only options when clicking on "Scan Now" were to choose the type of scan one wanted to perform, and activate it. I didn't even think to look in "Scan Now" because of experience from the previous version (and why WOULD anyone, anyway?).

The upshot of all this is that when I just checked a few minutes ago, there IS now a CONFIGURE link on the "Full System Scan" SETTINGS screen, which, when clicked, takes you to the same screen that's buried in the "Scan Now" > "Custom Scan" function. Oh, well--I guess my call to support and subsequent complaint about the poorly written instructions on Norton products have had some effect. But why did it take so long to figure out there was a problem?

This all brings me to the point of posting about the problem with the disappearing Anti-Spam button in Outlook Express. It has apparently been an ongoing issue, and the question remains, why so long?.

Regards,

Neil

So in other words, it's something that can't be fixed or Symantec hasn't figured out what is truly causing their service to drop out from Outlook express.  For someone that uses Outlook and Outlook express for different e-mail accounts, this is a challenge.

And it' interesting that all large software corporations are just ignoring customer complaints or true bug reports.  It's become the status quo of the industry.  I could rant about several companies that I've dealt with in the past few years about their software problems, and it never being fixed, but at this point, it would be a total waste of time.
