HI peedo,
Welcome to the Norton Community. Yes indeed NAV (Norton Antivirus) 2005 is very out of date. Do you have a new subscription for NAV? What version of Windows do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit?
Note that your current subscription for NAV 2005 will not allow you to upgrade for free. You would need to purhcase a new subscription. Only 2006 and later products can upgrade to current version for free.
If you have a new subscription for NAV, you can download the latest version of NAV 2011 from here and save to your desktop or another convenient location. Please note that this is the English version, let us know if you need a different language and we can provide the appropriate link for you.
Then download the Norton removal tool and also save to your desktop.
You should run the removal tool twice with a reboot in between each run and a reboot at the end.
After this, ensure that NAV no longer appears in your add/remove programs list.
Do you have any other security software installed besides NAV 2005? If so they should also be removed through add/remove programs as well as running a removal tool to ensure they do not leave anything behind which could interfere with installing the new version of NAV.
If you have a new subscription for NAV, you should now install it using the installer you downloaded earlier. After installation you can activate NAV with the product key you purchased. Be sure to run live update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.
Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.

Hello peedo
Please also be aware that there is no more firewall function at all with NAV. If you are planning on installing NAV 2011, please check out the system requirements to make sure your computer meets the requirements.

We are assuming that the O/P wants to install NAV 2011. If you are going to install NAV 2011, please be aware that you should also have a firewall installed or at least a router with a good firewall in it.
Since your add/remove function is not working, that sounds like you might have either malware on your computer or you have a windows problem. This may interfere I would imagine with the proper installation of your NAV program also.
Can you give us any further information as to why your add/remove doesn't function? Thanks
Happy Holidays!
HI peedo,
Please note that use of the Norton removal tool will remove all Norton/Symantec software products, so ensure you have your other product keys available (if applicable) before running the removal tool as you might need them to reinstall the other software.
Best wishes.

After using the removal tool.....and having Norton 2005 removed.......I tried to download a newer version. A message said the connection to the server failed. It did this 3 times....I gave up. Not wanting to be left without an antivirus program, I downloaded a trial version of something else. It worked.
As for why my "Add/Remove Programs" doesn't work...I have no idea. It is a mystery to me.
The only thing I can think of is...a family member was messing with a bunch of things without my knowledge....installing new things..deleting others. He thought this would make my computer faster. It didn't and since then a lot of things are not working.
The Removal Tool worked. I am unable to download and install a new version at this time.
Hello peedo
It sounds like you have a windows problem which needs to be fixed to have your computer working properly.

Hi peedo,
What exactly are you attempting to download and what is the link you are using to download it? What precisely happens when you attempt to download the file?
If you are attempting to download NAV 2011, I provided the link earlier.
This is for the English version, let us know if you need a different language.
Have you already purchased a new subscription for NAV 2011? As I mentioned before, your NAV 2005 subscription cannot be used with NAV 2011.
Also you mentioned installing a trial version of a different anti-virus software. Which one did you install? You will need to uninstall this and use a removal tool to ensure it is completely removed before attempting to install NAV 2011 or whatever Norton product will be your replacement.
Let us know if you need help with how to do this properly.
Hope this helps and please let us know how it goes.
Best wishes.
