This same issue was posted 6/18/2009 by another user, but no solution was posted, and the Thread is locked....
I was in Facebook, and an ad for "Personal Anti-Virus" popped up.. I clicked Cancel instead of just closing the window and got burned. I closed the program that started running, and rebooted, but its too late. Seems my Norton Anti-virus 2009 Failed to protect me, and it was the target!
Now the Right click "Norton AV" options are just a white box.
Right click the Norton Running Task Bar Icon, is just an un-clickable small white Screen.
Clicking "Norton AntiVirus".. does nothing.
Double-clicking the Running Tasks Icon yields a big White screen, no options.
I tried Running the navw32 /A command line program, and a Norton AV (GUI) box opened, also all white, but with a readable Windows Title Bar.
I believe the Malware has changed the screen properties just for Norton AV..
Uninstall/Reinstall and it still happens..
OH, The Malware wiped out Every Saved Restore Point.
It also polluted my DNS Cache (I couldn't get to symantec.com) but a FlushDNS seems to have resolved that issue.
Once those steps are completed, unplug from the internet, restart your computer in SAFE MODE and run a complete Malwarebytes scan. If items are found, follow the Malwarebytes suggested procedure.
You should run the Malwarebytes scan a few times in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode to be sure it comes up clean.
Restart your computer in Normal Mode and check how things are working.
Please let us know how you do with this.
Once you have cleaned out the malware, you should consider the free update to NAV 2009. This product has a better detection engine, but does not have the firewall included in NAV 2007.
Welcome, frankpwi. There appears to be a discrepancy. The thread title refers to NAV 2007, but in your OP you say that you are running NAV 2009, could you clear this up?
Sorry I must have mistyped the title. Running Norton AV 2009 loaded from CD..
I appreciate the suggestions, and I'm considering Phil's suggestion. Its the best I've found, especially over the ones I found posted to other threads from others who picked up this problem. Unfortunatly I've wasted one night, and may not be able to try the solution soon. I am concerned though that this issue might be a virus or trogan instead of just malware. I ran the Free Norton scan and got no hits, but still its a concern. Who knows what Norton is trying to tell me behind that white screen of the installed version.
I'm working on backups of my most critical data right now.
If this adware distributed malware has been around for years (based on threads I've found) I still wonder why so little (in the way of viable solutions) is available? I also wonder why Norton allowed itself to get affected?
Ran the Malware program. First pass it found 2 Registry Entries, and a file in my temp Internet folder (which I had emptied previously).
The second pass ran clean.
A Third pass in "normal" mode also ran Clean.
My DNS cache was still being polluted (can't get to symantec.com), and Norton still opens as a white box. Tried another uninstall/reinstall using the complete option and running the cleanup tool. On reinstall all Norton programs look OK.
After Flushing DNS cache, I can get to Symantec, and with the malware finds, I hope it will stay clean, but only time will tell. My only wish would be to know what that ad/malware was (name) and why Norton allowed to to run.
