Norton Antivirus 2009 Not Working with Office/Outlook 2007

I have searched these forums and the Internet unsuccessfully for a solution to this problem. Norton 2009 anti-spam integration does not work with Microsoft Office 2007. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.  This post will focus on Outlook 2007; but I also have checked my other Office 2007 applications and even though Microsoft Office Automatic Scan is turned on, NAV does not appear in the add-ins lists or the Add-Ins tabs of those other applications either.  NAV thinks that it’s scanning Office files and emails, but it’s not doing that at all—Office doesn’t recognize that NAV exists.

My version of NAV was installed as part of the Norton SystemWorks 12 Premier bundle. NAV is currently running Version 16.7.2.11. In Settings > Internet Settings > Email Scan is turned on and all of its configuration options are turned on.

I ran the Microsoft Office Diagnostics application, which reported no problems with my computer or with the installation of my Office applications.

In Outlook, I checked View > Toolbars. There is no NAV toolbar listed, nothing to turn on.

In Outlook, I checked Help > Disabled Items. NAV is not listed there.

I checked the Outlook Trust Center. NAV is not listed in the Active, Inactive or Disabled Application Add-ins lists.

I disabled Email Scan in NAV, rebooted, and re-enabled Email Scan. No Outlook toolbar and no Outlook Trust Center add-in.

I did a complete uninstall of NAV, rebooted, reinstalled NAV, ran LiveUpdate (including reboots) until there were no more updates to download. Still no Outlook toolbar and no Outlook Trust Center add-in.

The Trust Center offers an option at Manage: COM Add-ins, where I can manually install an add-in. I’d be willing to do that it if I knew the name of the NAV file that provides the anti-spam integration and where that file is located. I suspect it’s a DLL. There are some DLLs in the NAV Engine folder containing the term “plug.” For example, IPSPlug.dll says it’s the “Symantec Intrusion Prevention Plugin.” However, I cannot find a “plug” file that says it’s an Outlook plugin.

Does anybody know what the filename of the Outlook plugin is? Does anybody know how to enable NAV 2009 spam-integration in Outlook 2007 when Outlook does not list the toolbar and add-in? While we’re at it, how do I install the scanning function in my other Office applications? What the name of that plugin and to which Office applications should I add it?

Thanks.

Hi Chancellor23,

The toolbar for Outlook is only available if you install Norton 360 3.0 or Norton Internet Security which has Norton AntiSpam as a part of it. The Norton AntiVirus won't add any Toolbar to your Outlook as it does not have any AntiSpam components.

There is no need to add any plugins from Norton AntiVirus to scan the Microsoft office related files. The Norton AntiVirus will scan all Office files irrespective of it's source if you have Microsoft Office Scan enabled in it. I think, this function is performed by officeav.dll file.

Thanks BJM, I checked out the Microsoft article. It explains how to turn off the Norton Antivirus Office Plugin if I’m experiencing problems with system performance or security issues with my Office documents that might be caused by the plugin. My problem is that the plugin doesn't seem to be working at all. It’s not even listed in the Office apps add-in lists.

Yogesh, thank you, too. You’re right. I previously had NIS, but switched to SystemWorks when I switched to Vista. I assumed that the Outlook toolbar was part of NAV on my last computer, which is why I thought it was missing. However, I turned on the display progress indicator when scanning email messages. That indicator is not displaying like it did in previous versions of NAV; so I assumed that NAV isn't working correctly in Outlook.

Same thing with the Microsoft Office Automatic Scan. When I used to open an Office document, NAV would scan it and post a notice that the document was being scanned in the document’s status bar. I am no longer receiving a notice--in the status bar or elsewhere; so I assumed that the plugin isn't working correctly.

Hi Chancellor23

Hey BJM,

Apparently, somebody decided that my post was solved and clicked on the green solution button on my behalf. I didn’t do that. Personally, I don’t consider this thing solved. Maybe NAV now functions invisibly in the background, which isn’t a bad thing. Maybe Norton has changed how NAV communicates its functionality to the user, but I can’t find that in its help system.

As I wrote above, I should be seeing a progress indicator when sending email from Outlook, but I don’t see that indicator. I did in previous versions of NAV. I tested this several times with attachments as large as my ISP allows. Perhaps my computer is so phenomenal that the scan speeds by so fast it’s imperceptible. Maybe not. In my book, if one thing doesn’t work correctly, then other aspects of an application also may not work correctly.

As far as the Office plug-in goes, it doesn’t report its activity when I open an Office document and it does not appear in my Office apps’ add-in lists. Is it working? I can’t tell. As far as I’m concerned, it shouldn’t matter if the Office file is stored on my computer because Auto-Protect should have scanned it already. However, if I open an Office document that is an attachment to an email, has it been scanned? I can’t tell.

As it stands, I don’t feel entirely secure about my current antivirus protection. It’s so silent that I wonder if it’s even there and working. Occasionally, I get a message that I’ve acquired a tracking cookie, but that’s about it.

Go for an EICAR test.

1. Disable the AutoProtect from the Norton icon in system tray.

2. Download the EICAR test file from this LINK.

3. Attach that file to a self addressed email and send it, close Outlook.

4. Enable the AutoProtect back immediately.

5. Open your Inbox and try to download the attachment.

If you don't disable AutoProtect, you won't be able to download the test file. The file will be blocked by AutoProtect when you try to download. The samething will happen when this file is attached to the email.

Yogesh, thank you. This resolves my concerns.

I ran two tests. I used the EICAR single-level ZIP file as an email attachment; and NAV popped up a notification window and permanently removed the COM file that was inside the ZIP file when Outlook downloaded the email. Then I placed a copy of the EICAR TXT file on my desktop and re-enabled Auto-Protect. Again, NAV found and permanently removed the TXT file. I'm satisfied that NAV has my computer protected. I'll assume that the Office plug-in is working correctly even though I'm not seeing the Office status bar notification in this version of NAV. Besides, if the file is on my computer, it's already been scanned by Auto-Protect before I try to open it in Office.

I guess I've been very lucky with my new computer. No viruses and only one tracking cookie every week or two. I've used Norton products for over a decade and am amazed at how unobtrusive its software has become.

Thanks again.
