After installing NAV 2009 a few days ago, it seems that the Background Task in Idle Time is freezing my Desktop.
Say that when the computer goes in to Idle Time, and a few moments later I need to get back to my Desktop, the icons I can click on and it changes color, but it seems it does not want to start the application. Even the Start icon won't work. The only way to get out is to do a forced Cold Boot. I shut down the Screen Saver just incase it was interfering with NAV 2009, but no change. It seems that background tasks goes in to a loop and gets lost, and won't shut down. It has an attitude like "Don't bother me, I'm busy, Go away"!
I have a Dell computer:
Intel 4 Processor. 2.1 gig speed.
Mem is 1.5 gig bit.
Windows XP home, service pak 3.
If anyone has a solution, please help! I will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks Phil_D for responding...
The program I had before was NAV 2008. Plus it was a differcult one to uninstall.
The install of NAV 2009 had to reboot over 10 times. It kept complaining it had to do a cleaning process!
Rich,
Hi Rich,
Did you uninstall 2008 before installing 2009, or did you install 2009 "over-top" of 2008?
Thanks.
Hi Phil
I downloaded the current Uninstall program (Norton_Removal_Tool.exe) and ran it before I installed the 2009 version.
Incase you asked, the Norton Antivirus 2009 was downloaded from Norton.
Rich,
Hi Rich,
I am currently running NIS 2009, so I hope my suggestion is appropriate for NAV 2009.
Open the main Norton window and go to "Help & Support" in the upper right corner. Select "One Click Support".
A new interface will load. When done, click "Begin Support Session" which will run an automated scan of your product to check for issues.
If I am incorrect in any of these steps for NAV 2009, feel free to correct me.
Let me know how you do.
Hi Phil,
Thank You, I tried earlier this morning running that, which led me to this Community.
Anyhow, I ran the 'Support Session' again and it came back with "All Norton AntiVirus Scans appear normal."
I ran a Quick Scan without any problems, and ran a Full Scan Saturday night. It was still running Sunday Morning, but I had to use the computer, come to think of it, I could not stop the scan and had to force "Cold Boot" (screen Frozen)!
Thanks,
Rich
Hi Rich,
Have you tried a manual "Run Live Update" to be sure you have the latest definitions and updates? If not, please repeat the procedure until there are no more updates left to download.
What other security products are you running? I have installed NIS 2009 on 5 different pc’s and never had to reboot.
Hi again Phil_D and Dieselman743,
Well, I checked for updates. everything is up-to-date.
As for other security products, I checked the Task Manager and discovered that my 'Webroot Spysweeper' at which I thought was off was in fact NOT. So I reboot to safe mode and did the Control Panel/Admin. Tools/ Services / Webroot and disabled it all together. The other security products I have was Firewall and Windows Security Advisor, which I don't think they would interfer. Or would they??
I'll give it a try tonight and at verious times I'll wake it up to see what happens. On the mean time, you guys have a good nite!
Thanks Again,
Rich
I came to this forum because I'm having the exact same problem. If I leave my computer unattended for more than 10 minutes, the message box indicating Norton is performing tasks in the background appears. If I use the computer within a few minutes, no problem but if I let it sit idle for around 30 minutes or more, my computer locks up and I'm forced to cold boot.
I bought NIS 2008 a few months ago hoping it would solve the problem I was having with NIS 2007 taking days to complete a full system scan. NIS 2008 did not solve that problem. I came here and everyone suggested I upgrade to NIS 2009 which I did. Now I have this problem. Will Symantec ever get this program straightened out? It's very frustrating.
I have WinXP SP3 and uninstalled NIS 2008 before installing NIS 2009. I was told to use the "Uninstall" feature in the Control Panel to remove NIS 2008 and I rebooted to clear the registry before installing NIS 2009. My version of NIS 2009 was downloaded from the Upgrade webpage.
Any help for me would also be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi scrapser,
Could you check that Full Screen Detection is ON? It should be on by default, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
This option will suppress alerts and suspend background activities when you run applications in full-screen mode.
Open the main NIS 2009 User Interface and click "Settings"
Then click "Miscellaneous Settings" and confirm that Full Screen Detection is ON.
If it is already on, try "cycling" it. Turn it OFF then hit Apply, OK and exit the interface. Reopen the interface and turn it back ON, hit Apply, OK and exit the interface.
Let us know.
Are you using any other security software?
Yes…Full Screen Detection is on. I will try cycling it as you suggested and see what happens when I deliberately let the PC sit idle. The only other protection software I use is Webroot’s SpySweeper which is updated to the latest version and updates.
Thats your problem. There are other threads on Spy Sweeper. NIS 2009 and Spy Sweeper do not get along. You also do not need 2 real time anti spyware programs running. Uninstall Spy Sweeper and install Malware Bytes Anti Malware and use it on demand about once a week or so. When making a thread it helps to provide as much info as possible.
Overlapping security is never a good thing.
Hi Phil_D and Dieselman,
How you today? Well, My computer has failed with flyin colors again. When I got back to my computer this Morning, with Webroot shut down and Screen Saver off, also the Standby, and Hibernate both was off. I noted my Desktop was not frozen, but seriously Lag. I clicked on the Start Key and 10 minutes later the Start Menu opened up. I clicked on the Programs, and approx. 5-7 ,minutes later the programs menu opened up. I kept doing this until I finally got to start up Norton main program, it took the better half of this morning, but I got there. I finally went to it's CPU Usage and found that my CPU was 100% used, and the graph only showed for about 30minutes with in the Idle Time. The Memory Usage was 25% up the graph also. I tried to open the Task Manager to see what procs were running but I could not get it to open. Also I could not shut the Norton Program now. What A BIG Headache!

Why the need for Malware? Isn't NIS doing the same thing as SpySweeper with the Anti Spyware turned on?
That aside, I was able to successfully perform a full scan on my PC/WinXP OS overnight. I say successful because it completed in less than 8 hours. First time I've been able to do that with NIS since the 2006 version.
So with that encouragement, I rebooted my PC into Vista Home Premium 32 (I have a dual boot setup using System Commander) and tried a full scan. Unfortunately, I found it locked up this afternoon after work at 75,933 files. Never finished the C drive which is weird since I have only the OS and a couple games under Vista but a ton of stuff under WinXP. I had to reset to get the computer out of the lock, then had to boot into safe mode, then normal to get Vista to function again.
Never a dull moment!
I recommended Malware Bytes as a on demand back up scanner. Spy Sweeper is a real time protection anti spyware programs which means it is running all the time. Malware Bytes doesnt run all the time. Only when you open it up. Hence on demand.
