Norton Antivirus 2011 Affecting PC/Internet Speed?

I've had my PC (XP OS) Microsoft Firewall, Linksys Router and Norton Antivirus for several years, and working on the Internet has been a little slow, but quite adequate for me. Today, however, using the Internet was particularly slow. I checked the download speeds independently (twice) and the download speeds were 0.2 Mb/s, when they should have been 10 Mb/s.

My ISP (Virgin) assures me that it's my PC at fault, and that my Norton AV 2011 is "fighting" with the Microsoft Firewall (the download speed did improve markedly in "Safe Mode"). The advice was to remove both the Norton Antivirus and the Firewall and replace them with Virgin Media Security. Apparently Norton AV has a Firewall. I didn't know that, unless Intrusion Protection is a Firewall?

I'd rather not remove my Norton AV. Would it make sense to remove the Microsoft Firewall, and keep Norton AV?

It's strange that after all this time I should get this problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (before I do something rash!).

Regards.  Pete
