Norton Background Tasks won't stop running!

I’ve been running Norton 360 for almost a year now on my HP laptop after running Norton Internet Security for the previous 2 years on my desktop, and I keep having the same frustrating problem with Norton 360 that makes me never want to buy another Norton product ever again (I never had this problem with Norton Internet Security).  Whenever I leave my laptop idle for more than 10 minutes or so, Norton 360 begins to run a comprehensive background scan, even though I have set my background scans to manual mode, and everytime the scan starts running, my laptop begins to freeze and I am unable to do other tasks.  If I try to stop the scan after it has started, my laptop will be unresponsive and freeze.  I use my laptop a lot for rendering purposes, and if anyone knows about rendering programs, one rendering could take anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours to complete, depending on the amount of materials applied, so naturally, I want to leave my laptop idle while the rendering is being completed, but can not because Norton 360 will start a comprehensive background scan if I leave my laptop idle for more than 10 minutes or so.  I have unchecked the button for automatic LiveUpdate to run, and I thought that would solve my problem, but the scans are still running after my laptop is idle, so I don’t know what else to do.  I have tried to fix this problem for about 6 months now, but can not, so hopefully someone can tell me how to stop these automatic background scans.  If there is no way to stop them, thankfully I only have 80 something days left on my subscription, so I can buy another brand computer security system that’s not named Norton.

Have you tried adding your rendering programs to the ‘Quiet Mode Programs’ list? You’ll find the Quiet Mode options for ‘User-Specified Programs’ under the Silent Mode settings dialog.

Mate....you've got no hope. Go find my thread started by me. The 'Gurus' here are happy to let this product act like an Operating System and all they know is how to direct you to a help file that doesn't answer the question or solve the problem.

I know exactly how you feel. Most of the people here must be walking away from their PC's with some small Word document open.

Cause that's the only way you could work and run Norton 360.

This 'Comprehensive or Idle Time' stranglehold on computers needs to be fixed, to be stopped, or Norton will lose people en masse.

JesusD....you won't get any decent answers here. No one wants to admit that 360 have a serious operational flaw.

Don't bother.

And it's sad to know that someone else's PC is being strangled by what........................a piece of diagnostic software!!!!

The program may help you to continue to run your machine, but it won't make you money like the software programs that it is slowing to a walk.

Hi Jesus D

You can turn on Silent Mode for up to 6 hours at a time. During that time there won't be any full system scans. There might still be very brief idle quick scans, but they last less than a minute and only happen at the most about 3 times in a 24 hour period. Have you tried that solution to see if that will help you?

This is an old thread so posting this in case anyone comes looking to see what’s happened to quiet mode, like I did just now. Appears the new Norton 360 v24 UI has dropped the Silent Mode (and Quiet mode for adding programs to run uninterrupted by Norton).
At this point I have not found any functional solutions to keep Norton background processes from running while my backup Apps (etc) are running.

(other than setting All auto updates OFF and Disabling Auto Protect and Firewall and/or looking into a different security app)
