Norton Backup Now Less Secure On Multiple Computers?

Longtime Norton user. Running this latest Norton v.24. On previous versions, you were able to see your backup in Windows Explorer and restore files from there. But I believe you actually had to be logged into the product to be able to restore anything. Also, this new UI looks like it removed those icons in Explorer.

I was just testing things out but hopefully someone with knowledge can chime in. I have desktop computer A and laptop computer B, each with their own backup set. While using computer A, not logged in to Norton, I can restore files from both backup sets from computer A and B.

While on computer B, not logged in, when trying to restore files from backup sets from computers A and B, I get a message that there’s an error and they couldn’t be restored (which is what I expect/want). When I log into computer B, I am able to restore from both backup sets (also expected/wanted).

Is there a reason why I was able to restore both backup sets while not logged into computer A, but not able to do this while not logged into computer B? And that is a bit more of a security risk if anyone has access to computer A that they can now restore backup sets from other computers as well, without being logged into Norton. I get that if they can log into computer A in the first place they don’t need backup sets of that computer they can just directly access/copy your files, but now they get all other computers’ info as well from their backup sets. I swear it didn’t used to be like this.

by not logged in to Norton = you mean not logged in at my.norton.com or not signed in at Norton 360?

Logged out at both places. I thought you were on to something as I might have still been logged into the website. But I just tested being logged out on Norton’s website and the app on my PC and I’m still able to restore files for another PC.

Just wondering if there’s a setting I’m missing or something? Or is it because one of these computers is the “main” or “master” computer that has more privileged access or something?

I haven’t dug too deep into this yet, but on appearance these change appears to be a bit more than a UI refresh. Norton also now has 11 processes running in my task manager :unamused:

Oh okay…so…not signed in at Norton 360.
I’ll see if I can test my side.

fwiw ~ I’m not concerned about Task Manager listing Norton v24 processes here.
maybe, v22 processes were bundled?
maybe, v24 runs more discrete processes?

Edit: Hello @stonerose
as test: call restore from A backup set & from B backup set
Yes, appears Norton 360 log in status is not a factor.
I can call restore from A backup set &or from B backup set.
Yes, appears I’m still able to restore files for another PC.

Sorry, I don’t recall whether v22 was same or not?

Thanks for replying bjm. You’ve assisted me in the past with questions.

I just did some more testing, and it appears that backup still functions as it did in the past, eventually. Today I tried restoring both backup sets from desktop computer A and both backup sets from laptop computer B, and all four times it failed. I was logged out from the app on the desktop and laptop as well as my account on Norton’s website.

Yesterday I was still able to restore both sets from desktop A while logged out, BUT I think perhaps it takes a bit of time for this logged out status to update server side at Norton, as today about 18 hours later or whatever I can no longer restore anything. This is the behaviour I want as I am usually logged out of Norton everywhere, and if anyone gets access to either computer, they can’t pull anything from the backup sets at least.

I know I have bigger problems if they have access to a system, but at least exposure is reduced to one system, not both, if they do manage to get access.

Thanks for the note about the background processes. I’m not going to sweat over it. No problems yet, so I will forget about it until I have reason not to.

That being said, there’s other stuff I’m not happy about. The other day it basically removed and quarantined an autohotkey script without any warning. Just gone from its location. At least ask me first. Seems to be a little more aggressive than before.

Anyway, thanks again for your input.

fwiw ~ I remained Logged out on this machine since our visit yesterday. At this time…I’m able to call Restore from both backup sets (this machine & my spare machine). At this time…appears, I’m able to restore files from my spare machine to this machine. I’ve cancelled Restore calls.

Note: I’m Signed in on my spare machine.
Note: from my Signed in spare machine. At this time…I’m able to call Restore from both backup sets. I’ve cancelled Restore calls.

as test: I’ll Sign out spare machine now and re-test later.
