Norton blocking directx installation?

I tried to download and install direct x (from microsoft website).

When it’s done, it tells me : “A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted”, and i clicked ok and it says installation failed.

I tried what microsoft says, going into services and see if cryptography or something is on and automatic, and it is.

I did a scan with norton and MBAM, nope not caused by some malicious things.

I thought it was only on my vista 64 bit computer. So i tried using my XP computer (never for internet usage, just for project, but has norton too.) and the same thing hapened. I now suspect it’s norton’s doing.

can someone try updating your direct x here? i am using nis 2010.

Thanks, phil for replying. Finally someone did.

I press run like i always do in the past. In the past, it can be installed.

And like i said in my first post, i tried going to services > cryptograph or something > and to see if it’s enabled, on, and set to automatically. And it is.

I also went to some forums, see the messages, tried them. Doesn’t work. Tried going into cmd and do somethings they said, dont work.

I did save, too, instead of run. Still doesn’t work.

Phil, can you try installing direct x from the link i gave on my first post and see if it gives the same message? Thx!

It’s a window message

Screen shots below. (Sorry if it doesn’t come out. Don’t know how to post it.)

Based upon your screenshot #3, you are correct that the warning you are getting is from Windows. Norton is not involved.

I followed your steps by selecting "Run" and the installation was successful on my XP SP3 test machine.

Sorry that I can't reproduce the failure.

I don’t know why it happened, but this problem doesn’t happen on my computer which doesn’t have norton, and it does on my xp and vista.

Based upon information in your first post, I assume you have followed these steps provided at this MS page?

Your system may be corrupted, or cryptographic services may be disabled, if you encounter the following error message during installation: "A cabinet file is necessary for installation and cannot be trusted." To resolve the problem, try the following:

1. Enable cryptographic services. On the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. The Computer Management window appears. In the left navigation pane, click Services and Applications. In the right pane, double-click Services, and then double-click Cryptographic Services. The Cryptographic Services Properties property sheet appears. On the General tab, ensure that Service Status is Started, and that Startup Types Automatic.

2. If you are running Windows on a FAT32 drive, run scandisk.

3. Try the resolution steps in Detecting digital signing issues in Windows XP.

4. Try the resolution steps in You cannot install some updates or programs.

5. Remove temporary files in the %temp% folder. If you are installing an end-user runtime, also remove "%windir%\system32\directx\websetup Error."

Hi tanmx

Please try running dxdiag and see what that comes up with.

Btw, which direct x are you trying to install?

Dxdiag only shows your system information, isn't it? It doesn't really solves the problem.

If you went to the link given, direct x is an auto-update. It scans your directx file and just update as needed.

Hi tanmx

dxdiag is a diagnostic tool for direct x. It also has a troubleshooter which can help to diagnose your problem. It will tell you I believe if you are missing any files also.

Hi tanmx

If you go to this site, you can pick out the version of direct x that you want or need depending on your operating system and vid card. You have to pick the correct version for your computer based on operating system and video card. If you pick out the wrong version, it may not install then either.
