Norton Blocking my development app from compiling

Starting today I can no longer compile in my Development application. When I try, I get a vicious file error message. And the compile stops. The only way I can get my compiles to work is when I disable Auto protect. I have the app listed in settings with Allow all permissions. I have been using this app for years. Please advise what I need to do in Norton to allow the app to compile my project.

I am using Windows 10 PRO.

Hello @Ron_Katz
and you’ve added Antivirus & Scans exclusions?
Are you Norton 360 v24?
Are you using Visual Studio? info here

Can you create work product folder and exclude folder with Antivirus and Scans?

Not using Visual Studio
Where do I check to add Antivirus & Scans Exclusion?
I do not know what you mean by " Can you create work product folder and exclude folder with Antivirus and Scans?"

I was wondering whether you can work from (use your Development app) an excluded folder. Maybe, your Development app need access to the live system.

OK when I exclude the folder, I do not get the error but when I try to compile, it attempts to compile, and then just exists. The only way I can get the compile to work is disable Auto Protect.

Does your Norton generate report files? - may be something with reports pointing to what needs to be excluded?
Maybe, Norton is objecting to .tmp files created by compile?

Does “exists” event render any Norton notice?

your Auto-Protect scans Recommended files or All files?

Caveat: I’ve no experience with “Development app”

may be best to report issue and offer to send debug logs

No I do not get any error when the app exits.
Here is a screen shot of the reports folder. What file do I need to look at?

Guessing → FileSystemShield &or BehaviorShield for starters

Maybe, “exists” event does not generate Norton report…since, no error when the app exits.

and compile executable is excluded?
is it possible to exclude “compile” exe/dll/tmp ?

All the files tell me is ‘Shield stopped’ at the and time I did this. Nothing has changed with my development software. I don’t know if the last Norton upgrade caused this. Don’t know where to go from here. Other than disabling Norton when I am doing this.

I’ve no way to reproduce my side…so, I don’t know. I was hoping your issue was similar to Visual Studio reports.

Actually I have this resolved now. Looks like I was using the wrong folder to exclude scanning.
It is working now. Thanks for your help.

Hello again @Ron_Katz
Oh! Okay!.
Thanks for posting your progress.

So, Auto-Protect was the engine causing “exits” despite Norton not rendering any notices?

No resolution on this ? As far as I’m concerned, Norton is essentially acting as malware itself by this behaviour and not allowing a proper way of usage by developers. It’s freezing up my Visual Studio entirely and only a machine restart will clear that. Now becoming unusable.

@DAVID_MURRAY1 Have you followed the suggestions in the thread for a possible resolution? Please advise.

Yes. It still happens now and then. Then I retry and it works.

The key is to create one master folder for all your projects. Then exclude that folder from the noted scans.
