Norton blocks a safe site for no reason

I never had problems with this until about 20 minutes ago. A site I use very often has just been blocked by Norton for no reason. And when I click on view the site anyways, it says page not found and I end up on some stupid Norton site. I opened up Norton and did thecheck site thing and it found 0 issues with the site in question. It's really pissing me off because there's no option to add it to a safe list or anything. It just says exit the site or view it anyways, which of course leads me to the page not found thing.  Norton just denies me access to a website for no reason and I'm pretty livid about the whole situation. The settings for the program itself are confusing as hell, and trying to find out how to fix it is quite the task aswell. Just make **bleep** simpler. And how the hell can I veiw my site without being hassled by Norton?

FYI: the site in question is  runescape.wikia.com

Hi Captain_Cody,

I am able to reach the site without any alerts or page blocks.  Does the URL shown on your page block screen match the URL you are trying to reach, or does it indicate you are being redirected, possibly to a malicious site?

Hi Captain_Cody,

I too am able to get to the website with no problems and as noted in the URL below, Safe Web shows no problems with the site.

http://safeweb.norton.com/report/show?url=%20runescape.wikia.com

Best wishes.

I'm using the latest version of Firefox. The website loads up fine at first, but it'll keep loading for a few seconds then show me the page blocked thing. and the url becomes this-> symres:C:\Program%20Files%20%28x86%29\Norton%20Internet%20Security\MUI\18.5.0.125\09\01\coUICtlr.loc/SUSPICIOUSREDIRECT.HTML

I figured out that if I hurry fast enough that I can hit the stop button before it loads that page and I can browse the site just fine. Is there anything I can do to stop norton from blocking websites?

In my Norton history I looked at the Internet section, then Sites reported to Symantec. And over the past month and a half the like 50 times I've visited the website it says Submitted under the word status at the top. I never submitted anything bad about this site, as I use it constantly. There's nothing I can do to make Norton go away and stop blocking my freaking website?

Hi Captain_Cody,

I could be mistaken on this but it looks like this is redirecting. I'm sure SendOfJive will chime in soon, he is more familiar with this than I am.

But it is ODD because the resulting URL is pointing to your own hard drive!

As SendOfJive and I both have mentioned we do not see this problem when connecting to the website you mentioned.

Have you tried with IE instead of Firefox? Do you see the same thing with IE?

Best wishes.

Hi Captain_Cody,

Norton is not blocking wikia.com.  It is preventing you from being redirected to a different, possibly malicious site.  Are you entering the wikia.com address in the browser's address bar, or using a Google search result link to go to the site?  In the Norton block screen it should say "You attempted to access..."  Is there an IP address provided there?

Firefox is the only browser I have. It'd didn't start doing this until last night. And I've tried going to the link via Google and just typing it in. Both have the same result. Also, I have the site bookmarked on my browser bookmark bar thing and that's how I mainly access it. Is it possible for me to post screen shots? I think that would help you guys understand what I'm going through instead of me just trying to explain it, and everything be hit or miss.

HI Captain_Cody,

All Windows computers come with IE and though there are specific steps which some do in order to remove it, it is not recommended to attempt complete removal of IE. So IE should be available to you for troubleshooting and I would still recommend that you try it to see if is affected by this problem you are having.

And Yes you can attach screenshot. Click on the  symbol at the top of the reply editor, browse to your image and click Insert. You can also size the image for best fit. Please note that it is better to use Alt + Print Screen to capture the window you want us to see (make sure it is the active window) since it will capture just the one window and now the entire desktop.

Best wishes.

Well, when I went to take a screen shot the problem no longer occurs. If it happens again I'll be sure to post a ss. Thanks for yer help though everyone although I'm still baffled.

I'm having the same issue since last night. The site is mcfw.com. Full site report shows no issues, but attempting to view the site I keep getting the block page. Is there a whitelist for this feature at all to potentially bypass the blocks? I've used this site for years and there's never been an issue. Uploaded a screenshot of the page that loads instead of the site. The URL it displays is symres:C:\Program%20Files%20%28x86%29\Norton%20Internet%20Security\MUI\18.5.0.125\09\01\coUICtlr.loc/SUSPICIOUSREDIRECT.HTMLblock page.jpg

FYI, just tried it in IE and get the same result. If i click 'visit this page anyway' I get different results. IE displays the affected page, while Firefox says page not found (screenshot). I am running the current version of FF and just think it's weird that all of a sudden it's blocking a site that I've used reliably for years. Any help is appreciated!

HI Crash53,

Norton may be detecting an attempt to redirect you to a malicious site rather than the site you are requesting.  When you try to connect to the intended site something, possibly a bit of malicious JavaScript, might be trying to take you elsewhere.  Sites are compromised like this all the time.  The fact that the site is normally safe and you have visited it for years does not mean that it couldn't have been hacked yesterday.

Hello Crash53,

If the URL you posted is correct (mcfw.com), I am able to access the site in both IE8 and Firefox without any problems.

I entered the URL directly into the address bar and did not try to open from a search query link or a bookmark.

I've tried typing it in manually and the same thing occurs.

For extra info, for the past few months I have been running NoScript with FF and have mcfw.com whitelisted. I don't normally allow any scripts from advertisers servers but when I do it's only temporary access that is revoked either as soon as I finish on the current site, or once my browser is closed. In theory, that add-on should be blocking any scripts from running that have not been whitelisted. Up until now it has worked great and this is the only site I've run into any problems with.

Do I have any options with this, or do I basically have to wait for Symantec to review the site and tell my computer that it's ok?

If mcfw.com is the only domain that is whitelisted in NoScript you should be safe and the site should load.  I ran the site through a couple of online scanners and neither detected any problem.  Clear your cache and give it another go.

I cleared the cache and initially there was no change. Restarted FF and tried again to no avail but figured I would run a full system scan just to be on the safe side (Computer and Reputation scans). Comp is clean and 100% trusted. Tried the site again and it seems to be working normally. Maybe it just needs time for the Norton submission to get through the system and the site checked perhaps?

Not sure what ultimately fixed it but thanks for the assistance!!
