Norton can't run quick scan

Ok, so when I click on with quick scan checked nothing happens, it just returns to the task menu.

I have used the norton remover thing and uninstalled and reinstalled norton. I still have the same problem.

Now, before I uninstalled it when I would log out of my computer, and log back on and if the first and only application I open is norton, the quick scan will work. I haven't tried this since I reinstalled.

What is the fix? Reinstalling hasn't seem to help.

Also I find that when I download exe fifles norton will no long have a pop up saying whether the file is safe or not. Does this mean this feature of norton doesn't work anymore as well?

I've had this problem for at least a month now and I've reinstalled norton either yesterday or 2 days ago.

Hi EpicBlader, and welcome. Uninstalling via Progams and Features doesn't always remove the last dregs of a program.

Have you actually tried the specialised Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool ?, which will remove and reinstall your Norton product with a fresh version.

It's possible some files may have been corrupted during the uninstall reinstall process you've used before.

The link is here. http://www.norton.com/nrnr

A reboot will often help, as well.

Hi, and thanks for the reponse, but as you can read in my first post I have used the "norton remover thing" to uninstall and then install norton again. No luck has been achieved here.

I am using on windows 8 with norton version 21.1.0.18

I've read somewhere that norton can be buggy on windows 8 and a downgrade may fix the problem. Is this true for me? If so, how may I downgrade norton while also maintaining my current subscription?

Hi EpicBlader,

Let's see if we can consider revertting to an older version - you said that this situation has been occurring for  at least the past month.  Which version were you on when it started?  The older version or perhaps the newer version?  If on the older version and it was doing it - then it would not do any good trying to go back to the older version.

The bit about "if Norton is the first thing and only application open" - it seems to work - it certainly sounds ike you may have another security program installed on your system.  Please check Programs & Fetaures in the control Panel and see if there are any other AV/ Security programs installed, especially those that may run in real-time.

Also, are the automatic liveupdates running OK, can you tell from your history (Liveupdate time vs Scan Completed time) if a Quick Scan is running after a virus defintion update?

The problem started before I reinstalled norton, so it started it on the older version, I don;t know how to check this version.

There are no other AV programs installed, however now that you;ve asked me to check there is something called "search protection" by spigot inc installed on my computer. It says that it was installed today, but I have not installed this or heard anything of this until now. What is this and should I remove it? After a google search (wihtout clicking any of links) it seems as though a  lot of people have asked how to remove it.

Liveupdate works when I do it manually, I'm not sure about automatic updates since I never really know when they occur. I tried to go to my security history but nothing seems to happen when I click it.

Ok I uninstalled search protection, not really sure what that was.

Have you rebooted (in order to complete the uninstall) and tried to run a Quick Scan?

I've reinstalled norton a couple days ago now. And I've been on my computer numerous times, so I've turned it on and off at least 4 times or so. Still no luck.

If this persist I may have to consider another antivirus. I guess this will be the easiest solution.

But what is the next best thing on the market? I hear people say Kasperskpy is really good. What protection does Kaspersky offer that Norton doesn't? Or are they both good and top notch?

Hi, EpicBlader. The reason I asked it you had used the specialised tool in the link I provided, is because I wasn't sure if you'd used the Norton Removal Tool, or the Remove and Reinstall Tool.

They are two different tools, and the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool is the one I suggested you use, for the reasons previously stated.

It will completely remove your current install, and replace it.

Oh okay, I didn’t know that there were two different ones. I think that I used the removal tool. Let me try the remove and install tool.

I’m off the computer now though, currently on my phone.

So I’ll do it tomorrow and keep you guys posted.

So from this thread http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Unable-to-Run-Scans/m-p/1083909/highlight/false#M99842 I learnt that it's a problem from microsofts end.

And my quick seems to work now without me doing anything.

However, since I've had this problem for over a month now I am not convinced that my norton is entirely fixed.

I will continuously run one quick scan a day for a week to see if it works, if it does, I will consider my problem as resolved.

Thanks; I saw you pick up on that other thread just now. Microsoft did just release some updates in the last couple of days, so they may have finally fixed the underlying problem.

Keep us posted, so we'll know for sure! Fingers crossed....

I sure will keep you posted. I'll let you guys know if after a week it has been scanning with no problems. If there is a day that the scan doesn't work I'll let you guys know.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Okay so I turned off my computer for about an hour and now that I came back on it the quick scan doesn't work again.

Hi, EpicBlader. As it seems to be a Microsoft problem, you may wish to run a file check to see if you have a problem with any Microsoft files.

You need to use the Command Prompt with Administrator privileges, and in the Run box, type sfc /scannow

Note the space after sfc. This will run a system file check, and attempt to repair any damaged files.

Wow, thank you. I tried that and my quick scan works now. But I'll give it a couple more days and then I'll decide if this has been resolved.

Hopefully, you're good to go now. I'll keep my fingers crossed that, M/S and Norton play well together !....

So I've been able to run a quick scan over the last couple of days so I would say that my problem has been solved. Thank you very much F4E for the solution.

And thank you for letting us know! Having marked F4E's post as the Solution significantly increases the chances that future users experincing this issue will be able to go directly to the answer, rather than follow the circuitous path we put you through! LOL
