Norton Community Login issue

I have been experiencing this issue for a few months now:

When I try to login after acceding to a forum -- such as following a link in an email message about a new post -- I receive a "Page not found" error:

This may not happen every time, but it does happen more than 90% of the times. The way around I have been using is cumbersome -- I have to exit or close the page and click the link again. On this second attempt I usually get to the desired thread and find that I am already logged in.

Has anyone experienced this same issue or knows how to properly resolve it?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Sunil_GA:

Thanks for passing this on to the development team.

Just an FYI that I got a similar Page Not Found error today when logging in to the forum while viewing Jimmy1204's thread I need help with a game in the Tech Outpost board.  That's only notable because this thread is currently a single-page thread and not a multi-page thread (i.e., the UTF-8 character set for "page=1" is page%3D0) .

I haven't been paying close attention to these Page Not Found errors lately, but in my previous posts I had stated that this login / logout error normally occurred when I was viewing a multi-page thread (i.e., when the URL encoding reference  ended with the ...page%3D1, ...page%3D2, etc.).  The errors may be more common with multi-page threads but it appears this error can occur with single-page threads as well.

I should also add that I've seen these Page Not Found errors on occasion if I login / logout while viewing my forum profile at https://community.norton.com/en/users/lmacri.

Thanks, Imacri, for raising once again an issue about which I had cried for help more than one year ago. I seem not to have been as fortunate as you obviously were, having this prompt and reassuring response from an ADMIN...

And thanks, Sunil_GA, for picking up this issue immediately. I'm now very hopeful that we'll get a solution soon for this annoyance.

Cheers.

Thanks @lmacri,

I'm able to repro this issue. will report to our forum Dev team.

Just a reminder for the forum mods that this issue where users see a Page Not Found error when logging in or out of the forum while viewing page 2, page 3, etc. of a multi-page thread is still unresolved.

Here's what I saw this morning after logging in to the forum while viewing page 2 of Krusty13's thread Announcing Beta of Malwarebytes 3.0, a Next-Generation Antivirus Replacement :

Thanks, Peter, for your input.

Well, I happen to think this is one of those things that do not exactly qualify as a "fire" and, as such, there is no real need to call the fire department...

And yes, I understand that, in terms of priorities, Tony must have his hands full these days with other quite more pressing issues. Still, this could perhaps be worth keeping in the list of other "desirable" improvements, to go through in an idle day (if such thing still exists)...

Tony Weiss does monitor this Forum Feedback board. He will have seen this issue, even if he has not replied.

Oh, sorry for my oversight... In fact, I didn't check it but I had instinctively assumed you were a Guru. And honestly, I do think you should be.

I also hate to be a pest...  So I would give it some time and see if one of them happens to become aware of our plea for assistance here...

Meanwhile, thanks for your continued help.

LinYu2:

Now, would it be possible that either you or Hugh or floplot could get in touch with an Administrator, such as TW, and try to get him to have the team look at the problem and possibly come up with a solution? This would be really great.

Hi LinYu2:

Sorry, I'm not a Guru so I don't have direct access to the Symantec employees.  If one of the Forum Administrators doesn't notice your thread we'll have to impose on floplot or huwyngr to @mention someone from Symantec or give them a heads up in their private forum.

Hi Imacri,

It seems that you are absolutely correct. I now realize that in my testing it never occurred to me that it could make a difference whether you were logging-in or out from the first or from any other page. Now that you pointed it out, I did a series of new tests and can back you up entirely -- you will not have the problem if you log in or out from the first page; but you always will, if you do it from any other page. And also, the cookies seem to play no part on it. Great finding you did!...

Now, would it be possible that either you or Hugh or floplot could get in touch with an Administrator, such as TW, and try to get him to have the team look at the problem and possibly come up with a solution? This would be really great.

Many thanks for your great help and persistence.

I did a bit of testing today with CCleaner and my error messages don't seem to be connected to cookies.  I'm not certain, but it looks like I can re-create this error message if I log in while viewing the last page in a thread with multiples pages e.g., https://community.norton.com/en/forums/ns-fails-update-latest-version-again?page=1#comments, and it doesn't seem to matter if I try this login with or without clearing the Norton-related cookies from my browser.

Like LinYu2's image <here>, my error messages always have a reference to something like 3Fpage%3D4, so it my case it appears that the forum software might be having problems redirecting back to the correct page if I log in to the forum while viewing the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. (or perhaps just the last) page of a multi-page thread.

EDIT:

I also just noticed that I see a similar error if I log out of the forum while viewing the last page in a thread with multiples pages e.g., https://community.norton.com/en/forums/ns-fails-update-latest-version-again?page=1#comments.

Indeed... I am now pretty much sure that the issue is directly related to the presence (or absence) of the cookies. I say "cookies" because there are three of them that seem to have to be there all the time if the "Page not found" error is to be avoided.

There are three different cookies that need to be present when one connects to the Community Forums: "norton.com", "login.norton.com" and "community.norton.com". If or when they are not present, that's when the issue  pops up.

Addressing the situation mentioned by floplot, I have my Firefox settings as to always accept "non third party cookies", with the exceptions that I specify. In addition, I periodically "prune" the cookies that accumulate in the list from visiting sites, leaving only those few that I know I need for my regular sign-in activities, like Hugh suggests. I have been doing fine with this procedure and because I was unaware of the connection of the Norton cookies to my sign-in into the Forums, they were being systematically taken out in the process I just described.

So the solution seems to be simple: Hugh is absolutely right -- I need to keep those Norton cookies in my list if I want to avoid having to deal with the error message. So I will do...

Many thanks to all who cared to help and provided their insights. Deeply appreciated.

Cheers!

P.S. - A word of thanks too for Krusty13’s advice about the proper location of this thread. Good for future reference, since this particular case has now been resolved.

I can confirm missing cookies as most likely. I ran CCleaner earlier without checking the list of what would be uninstalled and just now when I came to read a private message here from the email advisory I was refused and had to log in....

Hello LinYu2

Your browser may clean cookies and keep the cookies from sites that are on your favorites list. At least that is how IE 11 works. You could also perhaps try logging into your Norton Account first and see if that helps. I stay logged into the Forum all the time also.

Thanks.

Although I do run a third party cleaner from time to time (CCleaner) I turn off the Cookies item in the general Windows cleanup screen it has. I do have its Intelligent Cookies Cleaner ON and run that manually from time to time --

Option 3: To use Intelligent Cookie Scan

  1. In CCleaner, click the Options icon on the left.
  2. Click the Cookies button. The list may take a few seconds to load. This list displays cookies from all the browsers you have installed on your system.
  3. To keep the cookies that store login data for the websites you use (for example web mail) click right mouse button on the Cookies to Delete column and choose Intelligent Scan from the menu list.
  4. Dialog box Intelligent Cookie Scan will appear and ask you to allow CCleaner to keep your persistent logins for websites.

and I sometimes go through the initial list and move entries manually one way or the other.

Hi Hugh,

Thanks for sharing. You may have hit the nail right on the head!... I tried playing a bit with the Norton cookies and I did not get the error message. This is a preliminary finding, so I may still have to play a little more and see what happens.

Whatever happens, I'll report back...

I stay logged in to the Norton Forums even when I don't have them up and running visibly and I don't get this. But I've certainly seen it if I'm not logged in eg if something has logged me out like a cleanup removing the Norton cookie?

Hi LinYu2,

FYI, we have a place for forum issues here  -  Forum Feedback

Cheers!

Hi Rainbow_2,

I have noticed that if I click on the notifying email link after being already "logged in", I will not encounter the problem. Basically, when I click to get to the thread I find no issue, whatsoever. But I have occasionally found that, without being logged in, I do not get the most recent posts to the thread, sometimes even the one about which I am being notified.

So, in order to get all the updates and/or if I decide to respond or add a comment, I need to login. It's immediately after that -- and only then -- that I am "awarded" this medal... Going through the steps I already outlined seems to be only way I have (or that I know) to get around it.

Let's hope someone comes up with a better solution...

Thanks for sharing your experience.
