Hi, I am using NIS 2010 version 17.0.0.136 and since yesterday the Norton Community Watch background task won’t run. I show that it ran for 22:14 yesterday at 9:50 am CDT and then was cancelled. I have rebooted twice since then hoping it would start again after that during an idle period, but so far it hasn’t. I clicked on it and it just stays in the stopped status, it won’t allow me to start it again. Just wondering if this will clear at some point? I seem to remember this happening a while back too.
Any errors in the History logs? How about the Error Reporting Log?
I can see the servers have no problem here as I just manually ran NCW from the Tasks display in NIS2010 and it ran and completed normally.
Hi-
When you run the Norton Community Watch, what do you expect it to be doing when it's running? Maybe you have nothing that needs to be done. Look at Security History and look at the Norton Community Watch section. What are the status of the listings there?
I show in the Norton Community Watch history that on Oct 6 at 7:39 am a “Statistical Submission: Hacktool” was submitted, just after that “Norton Community Watch Feedback” was waiting, and then a few dozen “Norton Community Watch Feedback” pending entries along with a few dozen “IPS Detection Statistical Submission” pending entries. I see what happened. I downloaded the new Nirsoft Utilities Launcher around that time and went to unzip it and it had about eight password programs that NIS registers as false positives and which NIS deleted. I never use the password programs from Nirsoft but use most of the others so I like Nirlauncher (after I edited out the password section). Hmm, I wonder how I can get the Norton Community Watch background task to restart now?

Hi, whiplash.
In Norton 2010 Products, once one set of N.C.W. Items have been Submitted, another set of Items will be generated and will be Submitted when N.C.W. next Runs. And so on.
I still can’t get the Norton Community Watch background task to start. Anyone have any ideas? The cause of the problem was the NirLauncher package from http://blog.nirsoft.net/ which when unzipped found 8 false positives. After the first one was submitted (heapmemview registering a false positive for hacktool) the task stopped working. I’m wondering if it might start again if I could somehow remove the waiting and pending entries, but how would I remove them?
Are you still having the problem? BTW, try uninstallling NIS09, running NRT at least twice, and reinstalling NIS10. In NIS10, you CAN run Norton Community Watch manually and on demand.
