Norton disconnecting me from my game?

I recently started playing a game called GunZ again. I used to play this a long time ago whilst I had a different Anti-virus, and had no issues what so ever.

Since I have started playing again I have been disconnecting from the game server after 30 seconds - 5 minutes.

I contacted the support team for the game and ask them. They told me that my anti-virus is probably the thing causing me to disconnect. So I disabled everything on the anti-virus and went onto the game. This worked perfectly, as I was able to play for hours without being disconnected once.

I have been disabling everything on the AV for the past week whilst I play the game. But today it randomly started disconnecting me even when I disable everything...

What is causing this? It can't be my connecting as I have an excellant connection. It can't be my computer since the game runs fine on it. Due to the fact it stoped when I was disabling everything, leads me to believe the AV is still causing me to d/c.

I have already added the game installation folder to exclude from scans, auto-protect and sonar detection. I have also got the .exe file as allow under "Network Settings > Program control".

What else can I do to try stop me from disconnecting?

Welcome Godzkiller,

May I suggest that you return to the default settings so that you again have full protection. Then use the 'silent mode' set to ON while you play. This should allow your Norton product to keep itself up-to-date and in communication with the servers except when you are gaming.

Let us know how this works, we'll keep a light on

Try adding the game .exe to full-screen mode in order to suppress some of the background items that may interfere.

Usually, if you can connect, it is not the firewall, and if the game software downloads and runs, it is not auto-protect.  Did you also check with your ISP about lease renewal times, as that can confuse the issue.

I just tried playing with the AV set as silent mode. It didn't help at all. Nothing changed.

The game is already a full screen game. You can't play it in window mode.

It also can't be to do with my ISP. I have an xbox and a PS3 and they have no issues with connectivity. I also get no connectivity issues when I play other games on my pc or when im browsing the web/watching videos. If it was my ISP it wouldn't have made any sense why it stoped d/cing me when I started disabling everything on the AV.

P.S. I don't know where the "quote" button is so I accidently gave you "kudos".

PPS: The 'quote' button only appears after you click on the 'reply' button. I'll remember to reduce the count by one - no harm done.

You don't have to remove it lol. It was still a useful post.

But anyways. Any other ideas on what I can do? :/:

Godzkiller,

I'm running out of ideas. Have you changed the full screen detection setting?

Thanks, I save that one under the heading of 'almost' since the problem isn't solved yet.

I'm being called to supper. Be back later, maybe a break and a meal will help me think better/clearer.

Could you please tell me where I can find the full screen detection setting? I have never heard of that before.

I have just tried playing with everything disabled on the AV and with the AV also in silent mode at the same. 30 minutes have gone by and so far no d/c. So it looks like that has worked. Although I am hoping there is a better soloution rather than disabling everything and putting it in silent mode everytime I want to play.

Settings > Miscellaneous settings > Silent mode settings

Hello

Did you have this game on your computer or did you download it recently again since you haven't played it in years? If you just recently downloaded it, where did you download it from? Have you port forwarded your router to allow for the game or port triggered as the case may be? Are you playing the same version as the server is using? Is your game fully patched and is it allowed into the firewall as patched? Are you using a server which is located near you? Have you run a tracert to the server ip to see if there are any unusually high hops along the way? Are you using the same server every time you play? Are you closing down other programs like messengers while you are playing? As you can see, many things can come into play,  not meant as a pun, to cause this issue. Thanks.

norton.pngAfter spending a while messing around with all the setting/options I think I have found what has been making me disconnect.

The game I play uses software called "GameGuard" to prevent people from using hacks on the game. It seems norton has been allowing the game but blocking the anti-hack software, therefore causing the game to kick me out/disconnect.

As you can see in the image above the file is not a .exe, but it is clear the reason why I keep disconnecting. I have been checking it for the past 20 minutes, by going on the game waiting to be disconnected then going onto Norton recent history and it always says that Norton blocked that file.

I have added it to "Network Setting > Program Control" and made it allow, but it still says it blocks it.

Now we know the issue do any of you know how to stop it?

Thanks again.

Anyone got any ideas of how to stop it from blocking that file?

Hello Godzkiller

Try putting it under Settings>Computer Settings>Antivirus and Sonar Exclusions>Signatures to Exclude from alll Scans. After reading what Gameguard does, I'm not so sure how it should be handled. Thuwin, it is doing more than just protecting Norton product this time. It is terminating the program. Please see this article for information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NProtect_GameGuard

I think its just stopping the program from accessing Norton.

Yes, the screenshot shows a Norton Product Tamper Protection entry, so Norton is not blocking the program from running, only from accessing Norton's process data.  GameGuard should continue to operate normally, but appears to be one of those programs that does not respond gracefully when access to Norton is denied.  This should be brought to the attention of the GameGuard developers to see if this behavior can be corrected in their program, as it should not require access to Norton process data in the first place.

So there is no way for me to just allow it to acces the process data? I trust the program as I use to play constantly for an entire year and Gamguard is used by thousands of people.

Anyone know how to stop it from blocking it?

First, you should temporarily disable tamper protection and confirm that this is the source of your issue. If it is the source, there is no way to disable this feature for a single application and the application would have to be fixed to properly handle this scenario.

Uninstalled Norton now. Was sick and tired of it disconnecting me.

I knew I should have gotten Kaspersky again.
