Norton Dns aka Connect Safe

Those of you wanting that little extra protection, might want to consider using Norton's Dns Servers to connect to the internet.

This page gives the relevent information.    https://dns.norton.com/dnsweb/huConfigurePc.do

I use them, and you can choose which policy you wish to use.  I haven't noticed any difference in loading speed, either. :smileyhappy:

Hi F4E,

Thanks for the info.

I'm in an apartment complex with wireless and antiquated 64-bit encryption.

I'm using Win8. In the article you cited there is a yellow box link that is not clickable..

Do you have the DNS server addresses?

Thanks

  • Preferred DNS: 198.153.192.40
  • Alternate DNS: 198.153.194.40  =  Security

or

  • Preferred DNS: 198.153.192.50
  • Alternate DNS: 198.153.194.50  =  Security + Pornography

or

  • Preferred DNS: 198.153.192.60
  • Alternate DNS: 198.153.194.60  = Secuity + Pornography + Non-Family Friendly

Ballistic, I use the unrestricted  Dns numbers which are Preferred 198.153.192.40 and the Alternate which is 198.153.194.40 aka =Security . The other numbers are if you wish to restrict access to *certain* sites !

Hope that helps....:smileyhappy:

Thanks guys. I haven't noticed any impact on performance either.

Does this then make Norton Safe Web lite redundant because it will block any dodgy (not green) sites?

How does it compare to other DNS services like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opendnshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Public_DNS, and others https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Public_DNS#See_also

OpenDNS needs a login account for example; Norton's is a 2 minute job to set up.

As for the information below - router level is better if you don't want to have different levels of protection on different machines and any device is automatically protected when connecting to the router?

I can't download the optional software?

https://dns.norton.com/dnsweb/dnsForHome.do tick the box and Click on Get Started:

Using Norton ConnectSafe

There are two basic ways to use Norton ConnectSafe.

  • You can either setup your router to use Norton ConnectSafe and protect your entire home network (recommended)
  • You can set up Norton ConnectSafe on individual computers

If you choose to setup Norton ConnectSafe on individual computers, we recommend downloading the optional software utility that will help you make the change.

vista, as I understand it, Norton Safe Web advises you if a site is safe or not, but using Norton Dns will actually block malicious sites....

You mean one could click on a malicious site flagged as red with Norton Safe Web and get infected  whereas Connect Safe won't allow you to visit the site in the first place!?

https://safeweb.norton.com/

https://safeweb.norton.com/lite

What's the difference between Safe Web and Safe Web lite?

vista, that's correct.  Known malicious sites are blocked, if you use Norton's DNS servers.   SafeWeb Lite is available to anyone, including non Norton customers. Norton Safe Web is installed in your browers, as part of NIS for paid subscribers....

FWIW ....I use it for almost 2 years now, defined in my router and I like it.

If you are a careful Inet user, it only sometimes it disallows you to visit a website, but when it does it's most of the times worth it.

For the less careful : user Norton DNS, it can save you and Quads:smileyhappy::smileysad: a lot of trouble !!! It's just another extra level of security!

Regards, Hugo

Compared to other DNS servers it seems very simple to setup - just enter the two IP numbers. I think OpenDNS you have to create an account.

Since Norton DNS uses the IPv4 addresses can I use Google DNS IPv6 addresses for more security?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Public_DNS

IPv4 addresses

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

IPv6 addresses

  • 2001:4860:4860::8888
  • 2001:4860:4860::8844

vista, frankly I'd rather rely on Norton's DNS servers, than anything Google has !......:smileywink:

I don't understand the IPv4 or IPv6 protocol stuff but my point is that can you use Norton IP addresses for IPv4 and use Google IP addresses for IPv6 for double protection?  Combine the two since Norton does not have IPv6 addresses in the Connection Properties window:

Hi All,

Although I am using NIS for at least nine years, I have never tried to set DNS Norton Safe Connect.

I would like to do a test to see how this works, and assess its impact on performance when browsing the Internet.

Before testing this utility, which would seem to provide further protection, I would like to know if the settings can be restored to its previous state in the event that I do not want to use them more.

Thanks for any suggestion.

All you are changing is the IP address of the DNS server you are using from what you have now(possibly the default from your ISP).

When you set up the Norton DNS you are replacing the default values. If you decide you want to revert to the previous settings you would just remove the values you entered and allow the default settings to be used again.

The directions at the Connect Safe site cover using your router or just changing settings on your PC.

Hello Peter,

Thank you very much for the information you have provided.

Now everything is clear to me.

I will try to use Norton DNS Connect Safe.

Thank you again or the help.

Sandro

I wanted to book mark this thread and compare it up against a couple DNS bench tests. Since I am using NIS,  ideally one would want to use Symantac's nameserver's for maximum security, however running Steve Gibson's DNSBench has given Symatac's nameserver's a real bad rating...stuff like Symantec's nameserver not responding or  Namesever redirecting (orange color). But I will run a couple other before ruling out Symatac's Nameserver's, Thanks Jason Rousseau.

PS: DNS is core to security, I know that hopefully non IT people willl realize that too.
