Actually you do not have to install the program to use the Norton DNS service.  I for one hate to install additional programs.  I basically change my DNS settings for my computers to 198.153.192.1 and 198.153.194.1  To revert back to the orginal settings, select on obtain IP address automatically.  I've been using this service for months (since beta) and it has never went down.  To check the status of the service just go to http://status.nortondns.com/

If the below image is still awaiting approval and you see a yellow triangle, click here to view the image on image shack.

To do that all you have to do is to go to your network and sharing center (search for network and click on network and sharing center).  Then click on change adapter settings. Right click on the connection you use and select properties.

In the next window that pops up, highlight Internet protocol Version 4.  Then click on properties.  After that, fill in the box with the above settings.

Hello, I have some questions on Norton DNS. I recently upgraded to Roadrunner Turbo so I'm looking at DNS for security, not speed. I'm going to use the software download to install the DNS service. Is this software located in the add/remove programs? If I decide I don't like it, does it really revert to my old settings? If the service goes down, then what do I do?Does it work OK with Firefox?..............I know nothing about DNS except it has a higher security than without it. I just want to make sure this does not ruin my PC. I'm having problems with neighbor brats and need higher security and I think this what I need. Thanks for any help before I leap................Paul

Tywin7 has offered you (with images) Norton instructions NDNS FAQ's for setting and testing NDNS manually.

No need to install / run the Windows Client.  No need to Agree to Norton License Agreement. No need to find Windows Client or uninstall Windows Client or uninstall NDNS.

To return your DNS settings to pre-NDNS setting > simply tic Obtain DNS server address automatically.

If you prefer to use NDNS Windows Client and later want to revert back.  Just uninstall it.  Yes, it will really revert to your old settings.  BTW.  Do you know your current DNS settings.  If your current DNS setting is not Obtain automatically.  Record your current Preferred and Alternate server settings.   Refer to Tywin7's images.  ;-)

If you are concerned about harming your PC.  If you are afraid to install / run NDNS Windows Client.  If you have any concerns re NDNS.  Then maybe trying NDNS is not for you.   As to neighbor brats.  Parental Controls are not part of current version.   This is a planned future feature.  Norton will not harm or help your neighbors. ;-)

Hi eezdva

Perchance, did you read these DNS Topics.

Several users (myself included) didn't get an answer.

Pardon me for asking.  Maybe user to user we can help each other.

If I can understand what you're doing correct...and if I can get to your happy NDNS place. Then maybe we can help each other figure out YouTube.

As you reported NDNS works great except for YouTube ?

Did you use the Windows Client or manual setup.

Myself and other users are experiencing buggy issues well beyond just YouTube.

Since you have had a mostly positive experience with NDNS.

Are you running a Norton product.  Are you behind a router.  Did you setup NDNS on your computer IPv4 or router.

I'd like to get beyond Servers not found and time outs.   Any ideas for users having negative/buggy experience with NDNS.

Simply....do you know why NDNS is less buggy for you.

Maybe we can get better exposure and some answers by keeping our issues live.

Please excuse my intrusion...as I suspect your post was directed at Symantec &/or Tywin7

Thanks for your interest.

Actually I have no idea why it works so great. In general all sites seem to load faster. But the videos in Youtube don't.  Bu on the other hand I didn't use it long enough maybe.

I configured it in my router that seems to work nicely.

Aha!  I've been configuring on my computer.   I have considered going by way of my router.  Posted NDNS info  all points to the computer.    Windows Client ! and manual settings made to IPv4.     Gotta' try my router.   Maybe the FAQ's need to be clarified.    Curious, did you try on your computer...or, you just decided by way of router.   Smart move I'm thinking.   So, we still need answer as to why issues with YouTube.

Wonder what your experience would be with NDNS configured on your puter.   You Tube was faster with your ISP DNS ?     Symantec promised to check into my issue....still waiting.

Thanks

On my computer it's the same.

And yes when I have it on my ISP it runs fast. So it's def. something with Norton DNS

Aha!  More pieces to the puzzle
Computer or router...same positive NDNS experience...albeit with the You Tube exception.
Interesting, very interesting.  Maybe YouTube slower is simply a bug.  As my NDNS experience has been buggy.  A few more bugs in not beyond a plausible explanation for now.

   Thanks much

I'm wondering if the issue is that Norton DNS is actually routing you to a server that is hosting YouTube video that isn't the closest to you.

Sites like YouTube are offered on many different servers, and you might be getting pointed to one that is not optimal.

Can you try to do a traceroute with both Norton DNS on and then off?

Thanks!!

Dan

BJM, why don’t you start a new thread ? You tube is full of virus and worse. I’m finished here and I’m not running Norton DNS.

Hi BJM,

From your traceroute it looks like in your case, the IP address that your default DNS returns is not the same as the IP address from NortonDNS. Knowing this, I will use the traceroute above to see if the differences between the two routes can be causing the slowdown.

I am not having slowdowns with YouTube.  I'm the user with buggy NDNS from over here

You requested info from me over here and I waited to hear from you ?

Sorry,  another user had YouTube issues.  I can't use NDNS long enough to have YouTube slow downs.

This user had YouTube issues.

I answered your request for pings over here and here

If your still interested.  I'll start a new Topic as you require.  You replied over here so I posted over here.

Thanks

Also sent you PM

What do you need from me to see why my Youtube is slow???
