Hi Norton community and support,
I have been using norton family for the past few years and I find that Norton Family should start to improve their capabilities or features. Initially, when using the norton family browser extension was fine when kids are still young and didn’t know how to disable the extension whenever they used a browser (like chrome, microsoft edge or mozilla firefox) but now as they get older they know that all the blocking from norton family can be avoided if they disable this norton family extension. Is there a way that norton can come up with an update that the extension of the browser cannot be disabled by child/youth and requires administration rights to the computer to disable it? Thank you.
Regards, Kim
Hi Kim_Poon,
Thank you for being a valuable customer and for sharing your feedback with us.
Norton Family browser extension is a prerequisite for the product to function completely and should not be removed or disabled. Generally, browsers give more privileges to users to control browser extensions on their computers.
In the event of the extension being removed or disabled by the child, Norton Family offers second layer of protection to safeguard the child as per the Web Supervision house rules configured. When the second layer of protection is enforced, child would see browser specific Internet access block page instead of Norton Family block page. However, the second layer of protection comes with few limitations as well.
We are constantly looking for alternate options to overcome the browser extension tampering. We understand your concern, we will let you know once we address this.
Thanks,
Norton Family team
Hi Srinivasan,
Thank you for your reply. I believe the Norton Web Supervision will not work once the Norton Family extension is disabled.
So your recommendation of using this second layer of protection would be useless.
I have been using Microsoft Family to do the web supervision as it is more effective but the only way to have control over the access of unauthorized websites is to allow only Microsoft Edge browsers to be used and block all other browsers from Microsoft Family.
If Norton still believe that Norton family is a good product for parents to be used for their children then there should be some yearly improvement and not continue with all the limitations and shortcomings, as the product can only be used for kids that are below a certain age (like 10-12 year old).
Once kids are more mature, they will know all the tricks/ways to bypass or override the system.
So, I would appreciate Norton Family development team to come up with updated solution, so that parents can effectively limit, control and monitor their children’s access.
Thank you for all your assistance. Looking forward to hear from you soon.
