Norton Firewall Blocking Pingtest and other

Hi!

Last few days I had slow internet problems. I contacted my ISP and they had asked me to run a speed test and clearled my browser cache. The speed tests results were tip top. But they couldn't explain why my internet was slow. I contacted the tech support of a game I play, they were helping a lot with this. They had me run some trace tests from cmd. It showed that I was experiencing EXTREMELY high latency, which was very abnormal for my internet.

Both my ISP and the gaming technicians suggested it is most likely my norton firewall and/ or norton insight. We tried a great deal of other things with my router/modem as well.

When they asked me to run a pingtest from pingtest.net, it showed this error after the test completed:

"packet loss: Java is not installed or enabled on your computer OR a firewall is blocking it."

My java is just fine, but it seems norton firewall has been acting weird as of late (my isp and those game tech. told me to contact norton as they suspect it was most likely an issue with my firewall).

So, for example, how can I get my pingtest working on pingtest.net?

I know I can do pingtests many other places, but in particular I want to see some ways I can control my firewall more than the obvious methods of "allow programs" etc.

Thanks! =)

anyone with any ideas? It seems the norton 360 is messing with my pings as my ISP and the gaming company put it,  how can I fix this?

Pleaseeee help =)

Hi dmsargana

Check for Norton updates, and recheck for updates restarting after every update.

Do a Norton full system scan.

Check the window firewall is off.

The paragraph below mentions Norton this refers to different product programmes so from NAV to NIS or to 360 if the Norton product was NIS 2012 then installing NIS 2013 by just installing it is ok unless the previous version was causing problems.  The below paragraph also concerns old versions of Norton so a few versions earlier of a Norton product.

Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton?

To uninstall any security software use the windows add/remove programme then restart the computer, then run the removal tool for the specific version of the security software that is available from the security software’s main site, then restart the computer.  This process should be done for each security software to be uninstalled, meaning one at a time.

If you have run the removal tool for Norton then, reinstall Norton restart the computer, run live updates as many times as it takes to get, no more live updates, restarting after every update.

You might like to backup the personal data and you’ll need to backup or export your identity safe and any other users identity safe if it is used, before doing the above.

Reset the Norton firewall.

thanks! finally :P I was beginning to think this community was... not very alive haha :)

I currently have no other internet security /antivirus program other than norton 360. I had malware bytes a while ago (8 months +) and I uninstalled it properly then with leaving no settings behind.

As for changing windows firewall settings, whenever I open it up, it says "these settings are being managed by norton 360."  Even if I try to click enable/disable, it does nothing as if there was no button to click enable/disable on the tab on the left side.

I also just did windows update, and none were found (I leave live update on automatic).

Also if I reinstall norton, does that mean the limit I have for installing norton (maximum of 3 computers) will use a "charge" form my activation key?

I did full system scan earlier today, and I'll try it again I suppose. Any additional ideas?

Thanks! =)

Hi dmsargana

Can you confirm you are up to date with Norton?  You wrote windows updates I wrote Norton updates.

You have windows 7 or 8 so Norton is managing it, it doesn’t manage it on vista or lower.

Your licence is for 3 users which has nothing to do with the amount of installation you perform for one of the users although excessive amount of installations from one user may cause problems.

Try running C cleaner.

C cleaner has two useful buttons, cleaner and registry the cleaner button doesn’t need a registry backup but the registry button does, use mzbackup before running the registry button.  Cleaning the registry can cause problems so it is best to leave it alone, research on the web for information.

On the left hand pane of the registry user interface there are check boxes that can be unchecked so that the files in these locations will not be affected.

On the left hand pane of the cleaner user interface there are check boxes that can be unchecked so that the files in these locations will not be deleted.

Both are freeware.

Sorry! It was late night, but I meant norton updates and I am running windows 7.

Thanks, and I will try C Cleaner now.

And if you need any more info regarding my comp/internet, do lemme know =)

It's not Norton causing the problem, it's the recent Java Update.  Oracle jacked up the security restrictions and the PingTest app now flunks the restrictions because it's not signed.  You can see this by opening the Java Console prior to running the test and looking at the errors. The only work around is to change the java.policy file to grant all rights to web apps or install an old version of Java.
