Norton Firewall off on boot up

I don't shutdown every evening (maybe 3 times a week or when a reboot is requested/suggested). The last few times on reboot Norton has notified me my PC is not secure because the Firewall is turned off. Other than Windows updates, the only change I have made recently is to switch to Firefox  as my default browser due to the fact I could no longer access certain secured sites via IE8.  Any chance these events are related?

Thanks, Dave

Hi stillgolfing

I don’t think changing the default browser would cause this type of issue.

Try a full Norton scan, do you have any other on demand scammers?

Can you check on the computer clock that the following are correct?

The time?

The day?

The month?

The Year?

The time zone?

Its written like this because in the past people check the time only and one of the others is incorrect and is causing problems for the Norton product.

To check the above click on the clock in the task bar, on the dialogue box that opens click on, change date and time settings.

Check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer.  It should tell you if any items where fixed.  If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.

Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton?  If so what is it?

Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?

What trial security software came with the compiter?

stillgolfing, what operating system are you using, and what Norton product ? Have you checked your firewall settings ? Is Program Control in the Advanced Settings set to Automatic ? Try running Live Update until no more are found, and re-boot. See if that settles things down.

Thanks Intersec and F4E for your suggestions. Checked all out and did not find any anomolies. Rebooted several times in interim with no problems. I now suspect the issue is related to Windows Update. I was away for several week recently and had to perform 2 months worth of Updates. I update manually due to past problems with Auto Update. I try to check out all the updates for known issues before installing and realized because I had been downloading them in small batches over the past couple of weeks that it was those ongoing reboots that were causing the problem. Downloaded the last 5 current updates last night, and guess what?  Norton's Firewal was turned off after reboot. Heading over to the Microsoft Help Forum to see if there is any info related to this there.

For the Record I'm using:

Norton Internet Security 2013 on an AMD dual core machine, 4 megs mem, running XP Pro SP3

Cheers, Dave

Hi stillgolfing

Can you check the windows firewall and windows defender is disabled then restart the computer if you have disabled it.

Can you answer the below questions?

Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton? If so what is it?

Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?

What trial security software came with the computer?

Try the below on demand scanners?

The links below need the basic version downloaded not the trial or the pro the same when installing to avoid any real time protection which should be turned off as it can conflict with your security software.  To download latest version top RHS of page.  Install and get updates.

NIS always disable Defender upon installation and DO NOT ADVISE USERS TO DISABLE THEIR WINDOWS FIREWALL.

Windows Firewall process should be set to automatic startup and it's managed by Norton, period.

Your comments are dangerous sometimes and I hope that you will take care of this.

In intesec's defense.

He was not suggesting changing the Windows Firewall Service. Just the firewall setting in the Windows Action Center.

Ensuring Windows Firewall is disabled in Action Center does not change the Services settings.

Peterweb,

NIS Smart firewall takes in consideration all the Windows Firewall rules before it was installed so the Windows firewall settings are managed by Norton, that doesn't mean the the windows Firewall is really disabled just administered by Norton.

As for your comment:

"He was not suggesting changing the Windows Firewall Service. Just the firewall setting in the Windows Action Center."

if NIS is properly installed and working this setting is already automatically changed by Norton.

Hope this helps,

Norton handles Firewall Control and as far as I am aware  Windows Defender is the antivirus/malware program that shipped with Win7 and can be downloaded for XP and Vista if you don't have a third party program.

Can you answer the below questions?

I use the free version of malwarebytes as a doublecheck on Norton (Sunday nights Run Norton fullscan then Malwarebytes fullscan)

Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?

None

What trial security software came with the computer?

Norton

Not sure I need another antivirus as I have used Norton in conjunction with Malwarebytes on this PC since new (7 years)

You have done a lot of updating and rebooting in a short time. You note that sometimes during this process, everything was OK.

Once you have everything up to date, reboot once more and use your system. Shut down at the end of the day, and see if things are back to normal again the next day.

Just to clarify:

Past 3 weeks including last night = 4 reboots (as requested by Microsoft Updates) after downloading some Windows Updates, and encountered, on all 4 reboots, Norton Red "Fix Now" flag saying Firewall turned off.

Past 3 days (testing intermitantly) = 15 reboots all O.K.

Hence I suspect next patch Tuesday (patch Thursday or Friday for me - depending on issues noted on various Tech sites) I will encounter, on reboot, the Firewall Off  flag.

I see on various Tech Sites several users over the years (including me previously) have noted odd occurrences/problems after a Windows  Update (including this particular issue with an earlier version of Norton) only to see the anomolies mysteriously rectified after the next batch of updates. Remember how long it took Norton to fix the recent Malwarebytes Problem? I think Microsoft is typically quicker, but we don't always know that because it's a secret. :)

Thanks for following up Dave

@stillgolfing :

this has happened to me the last several weeks too.. it's intermittent, sometimes the firwall turns on at boot up, and sometimes it does not.. like you, I feel a Norton live update will fix this problem eventually..

Thanks music-seed;

Good to know I am not alone.

Cheers, Dave
