Norton Full Scan Completes too soon

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me as i am having trouble with my Full Scan stopping (stating that it is Complete and Secure) after scanning around only 7000 files - my scans in the past have run up to nearly 100,000 files so this is clearly a problem. I know that it thinks its complete as it says, "Last scan" is the time/date when it only managed about 7000 files.

I am running Norton Internet Security (from BT Yahoo) and up until recently i have had no trouble at all and have not installed anything since it last worked.

Another new thing that keeps happening is that every time i turn on my PC i get the "Do you want to Run Live Update" pop-up, even though i can do it and straight away restart my PC, only to see it again - surely there can't be updates ready as my wireless hasn't had time to connect to the internet in some cases. This i don't mind so much as i can ignore it, although an easy solution would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Rob

P.s. I have made sure i am doing a full scan, rather than a quick one.

Hi robward,

Can you tell us which version of NIS you have through BT Yahoo? (Norton main interface > Help and Support > About)

Also, please let us know your operating system and service pack.

Thanks.

What is the exact version you are working with?

Hi Stu,

Great minds think alike!

Cheers

Its version 10.2.0.30 and I am running Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) - Service Pack 1

Hi Rob,

Try to run the scan in Safe mode and check whether the same problem happens.

1. Restart your computer.

2. As soon as the computer starts, tap the F8 key about once per second until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu.

3. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.

4. Click Yes to proceed to Safe Mode.

5. Click the Start button, and click All Programs > Accessories > Run.

6. Type navw32.exe /L and click OK.

7. Complete the full system scan.

Can you post us a picture about the main window? From some sites I found this version number as NIS2007, but as I know that was version 14....

2007 looked this way:

By the way if you have a valid subscription, you can upgrade free to the newest version (2009). Download the upgrade from here:

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/support/special/upgrade2007/vista/select_product.jsp

Hi PapauZ,

If Rob got the Norton program through his ISP- BT Yahoo, then he won't be able to install the free upgrade through the link you have provided. This is because the Norton products provided through ISP uses service activation using PIN number given by ISP. There won't be any activation key like the retail products and the PIN number won't be able to activate the upgrade. For upgrading, Rob may need to contact BT Yahoo, and then update to the current version.

No luck in safe mode!! actually does less files (between 4 and 5 thousand).

I feel i may have a virus so obviously i want it to do a full scan - could it be a virus that it stopping this running, as my pc started to do odd things about the same from what i remember.

please help!!

Thanks

Rob

p.s. just after i posted my last comment,  my pc went to a blue screen with the text "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to protect your computer...". it then automatically restarted.

i have had this a couple of times recently, which started happening around the same time that norton began failing to full scan - which is why i suspected a virus (but of course i haven't been able to scan my pc to check!!)

Rob

Hi Rob,

Do you have any other security products installed in your computer such as Spysweeper?

Open NIS 2007> Click on the Norton Internet Security tab> Click on the Settings tab> Click Auto-Protect>Configure>On the left pane, click General Settings under Manual Scanning>Make sure that scan within compressed files and Scan active programsand start-up files options are checked. If not please check the options.

Click Start>Run>In the Run dialogue box, type %temp% and then click OK.

This will open the temporary folder. Delete as many files as possible from the temporary folder.

Now run a full system scan and let us know the results.

Vineeth--

currently i have only got adaware installed on my pc, which i have run recently (all fine there).

When you say "as many files as possible", do i just select all and click delete? as otherwise i wouldn't have a clue which to pick!

I have both items already checked in the settings menu.

Thanks
Rob

All those files are just temporary files which are created when you run different applications. These will be re-created when you run those applications afterwards. You may not be able to delete some of the files from the Windows Temporary folder, since some of those files may be used by processes/services running in the background. You may get "Access Denied" message for those. I think, that's the reason why Vineeth mentioned "as many files as possible". You can select all and click delete. If you are unable to delete some of those files, then restart the computer and try to delete immediately after rebooting.

i deleted the files from the folder (all of them went) as well as after a reboot. i then scanned again and once more it stopped. I decided this time to look at the file names at the top instead of just the number (of files scanned so far) and realised that it stopped whilst searching for c:\FAUXVIRUS\carny ride.exe

i have read a few other threads on this happening to others, but can't find an explanation as to why my (and clearly a lot of other peoples) scans stop when scanning for this virus and state that the scan is complete when it clearly isn't.

i have done this twice to make sure and both times it stopped at the same time. it also found a low threat tracking cookie on both occasions, which i fixed.

hope this info helps you determine my problem

cheers

Rob

also tried to do custom scans to attempt to skip this, but no matter what i try to scan (drive, folder or file) it says “no risks found…” despite scanning 0 items. should this be happening??

Download/install Malwarebytes Antimalware program, update the program, reboot your computer to Safe mode and then run a full system scan from Malwarebytes. Click Malwarebytes AntiMalware to download it, it’s a free download software which may help you in detecting/removing such threats.

 Hi

For Norton 2007. The program gets hung up in a scan looking for a file (carny_ride.exe) that doesn't exist. It searches endlessly. It looks as though its some sort of bug.

That sounds like Corporate Anti-virus version number.

This forum is for Norton Consumer versions only.  Symantec Enterprise products are supported in another forum.

https://forums.symantec.com

The area you want specificially is Endpoint Protection.

Thanks!!

Not so much corporate as included with my BT Yahoo broadband at home so i am still technically a consumer - i just paid BT rather than Norton.

Hello

Attempted a scan using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware but before it got to the end of the scan i had a blue screen error and my computer restarted. I think that the scan was almost at the end and it hadn't found anything, although i wasn't able to update the software (it said my firewall was stopping it although i had allowed the program to run in my firewall settings).

i clearly have a problem with my pc as i get these blue screens now again. Does anyone have any suggestions about what i can do?

Thanks,

Rob
