Norton Ghost 15 file recovery fails

I just did a backup and it says Status Details: Backed up.

I can see recovery points, and I select Recover my Files.

I then search for a filename and click it, then click on Recover.

I get the error

"Cannot recover files because the backup data is unavailable or has been deleted."

I JUST TOOK THE BACKUP NOT 3 MINUTES AGO!

And this happens no matter what I do.

Norton Ghost continues to fail me. My first attempt at files and folders backup ended in disaster too. The files were backed up, but it was impossible to recover even one. Now this too? What is the value of a backup tools that wont let you recover anything ever? Its worse than no backup since you BELIEVE you're covered.

pistolhamster,

Did you create a .v2i file? If so, right click the file, Mount, accept the drive letter.

I created a custom backup job called File Backup that copied certain Documents and AppData folders. They are there on my backupdrive. But I cant retrieve any of the files again. Any way I try to get Ghost to do a Recover files operation just comes up with empty screens no matter how I try.

When I click on the backup job in the  Backup History  window on the Advanced tab, I cannot find any files. But there are around 25 gigabytes of backed up files right there. Why am I not able to pick any files from my backup?

When the Recover my Files window is open I am unable to find anything at all, even if I enter the file name very detailed.

If I browse the backup destination I see loads of rubbish like 1cc39998fb03.fbf but no files I can recognize. So the filenames are obfuscated and probably compressed and I am left with NO option to retrieve anything of it. Or at least the method which it must be done is eluding me completely.

When you are in the Recover My Files Wizard, highlight "Files and Folder". Then File > Import Backup Destination. Now browse to where your .fbf files are located and import the location. This will rebuild the index file for that location.

I would consider scrapping File and Folder Backup and just use images. They are much easier to work with and faster to restore anything from. See this post for more information...

A .v2i file? I have no idea what that is? I didn't obviously... Untill now. I found several v2i files on my backup destination: Should I simply pick the oldest one?

I am getting this error:

-Info 6C8F1C25: Cannot recover files because the backup data is unavailable or has been deleted.
--Error E4BC0005: Unable to restore file id: C:\Users\Søren J. Svendsen\Desktop\Cleanup\toolbok\elearning - toolbook\resources\biglogo.gif.
---Error E7D1000E: Unable to open 'H:/Norton Backups/File Backup Data/fbfFiles_d50/1cce98f8b0d50cb.fbf'. It does not exist.

Note: the H-drive isn't mounted. ITs supposed to backup to D drive and recover from D drive, so whats the idea of accessing the H drive? In my backup settings its D-drive all the way around and not one mention of H: anywhere. This is most vexxing.

Ah, I think I got it. I have to mount the recovery point as the H-drive. ITs quite confusing this. But it allows me to recover files at least.

You have got it. You can also mount an .iv2i file.
