I am running WinXP (32bit) and just installed Norton Ghost 15 after deinstalling Ghost 9 (which had worked fine).
- When I attempted my first backup I got the error:
Error EC8F1C50: Cannot create file backup for job: My Documents Backup.
Error E7B70005: Snapshot error Error EBAB03F1: OS error 2147754767.. (UMI:V-281-3215-7248)
- I found that the SymSnap services had not been started. I set them to Automatic and rebooted. I got the exact same error:
Error EC8F1C50: Cannot create file backup for job: My Documents Backup.
Error E7B70005: Snapshot error Error EBAB03F1: OS error 2147754767.. (UMI:V-281-3215-7248)
- I check the VSS providers and all looked fine:
C:\Documents and Settings\user>vssadmin list providers
vssadmin 1.0 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001 Microsoft Corp.
Provider name: 'Symantec Software VSS Provider'
Provider type: Software
Provider Id: {262b716e-bb23-41b5-aaef-e2c15e767167}
Version: 1.0
Provider name: 'MS Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
Provider type: System
Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
Version: 1.0.0.7
- I tried to do the next two recommended steps - unregister and re-register the SYmantec VSS provider which seemed to go properly.
- But when I attempt a backup, the writers are not left in a "Stable" state:

- I checked the registry entries associated with "Catalogs" per the Norton suggestion, but, the registry entries for System matched the Microsoft Tech Bulletin.
- I de-installed Ghost and re-installed it along with the multiple re-boots required during the install/liveupdate process and got the exact same error.
- Has anyone else had this type of problem? A Google search did not get any hits so I am left wondering what to do now?
