Norton Ghost 15 won't stop

I am running Norton Ghost 15 on a Windows 7 machine.

My current problem is that it won't stop. I have set it up to run a full drive backup set twice a week. Currently it has been running the backup set since the 27th Nov. I have cancelled the job but it takes ages to cancel, the last cancel I initiated was more then 24 hours ago, it still hasn't cancelled. Fianlly, on the Progess and Performance window, the backup set is shown as running, but latly it has been stuck at 'Calcul;ating remaining time', but the Performance slider is disabled as no job is running!!

I am unable to delete the job or change the settings, neither of which is allowed as the job is running. Stopping Norton Ghost and rebooting didn't work either it just picks up where it left off when Ghost is restarted. This happens whether I specify running missed jobs or not.

It has been running since 27th Nov as I hoped if I left it it would sort itself out, obviously it didn't.

What do you suggest, the only idea I have left is to delete Norton Ghost and reinstall, but what happens to my old backups. Don't tell me it'll find them when reinstalled, because I know from past exerience it doesn't.

As piece of software I am very unhappy with Ghost, because I have never known a piece of software with so many bugs.

Also keep in mind that even though the backups are no longer shown in history, they are still usable. I move them to another folder before you restart the Ghost service though.

Welcome,

Just a couple of questions. How big is the backup you are trying to run and where is the destination?

PS: Like the username :smileywink:

Okay I checked out the instructions you pointed me to, DStain, and they don't seem to apply. I am running on a Windows 7 system.

I've cut and pasted the instructions here with comments on my problems with them.

>Open services.msc and stop the Norton Ghost service.

I stopped the Norton Ghost service, but I used the Computer Management|Services route

>Using Windows Explorer, search and delete all .pq* files in:

>C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Norton Ghost\History

>and

>C:\ProgramData\Symantec\Norton Ghost\Schedule

        These directories do not exist

Ghost is installed in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Ghost' there are no subdirectories 'History' and 'Schedule'.

I've searched my machine and there are no .pq* files

>Now restart the Norton Ghost service. You will have to reconfigure your backup schedules.

Have I missed something, please let me know.

dickevans, to answer your questions

Okay the backup is of two disk drives C: is 179Gb and D: is 25.8Gb. The figures are the Used area as reported by rightClick menu|properties.

The Backup destination is a TeraStation NAS of 1.3Tb, which has 354Gb of free space.

I find it extreamly odd that it doesn't stop when you stop the Ghost service?

You are a little reluctant to clear the history, does that mean that it's been working fine for some time and it's succesfully made scheduled images onto that NAS is the past?

It does stop when I stop the service, but then as there is no service you cann't change any of the backup jobs, at least I know of no way to do it. When I resart the service we're back to the same problem.

Yes, it has created many successfully backups previously. In fact the only reason I detected the problem was when my Files and folders backup would not run. The error message was that it was aborted as there was already a job running, i.e. the drives backup that kept running and running.

The thing I find most baffling is that Progress reports a job running, but the Performance reports no job running.
