Hi dcubed,
You may wish to review the following Knowledge Base article for more information about Ghost 2003 compatibility with CD and DVD drives:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/2002030414141625
I apologize if you have already tried this route. Which operating system are you using? Which brand of External DVD durner are you using? Which types of disks? Which brand of disk? Any additional information about the problem is appreciated.
Thank you for your response.
External DVD/Drive is: Ativa Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A1H.
Connection: USB 2.0 PCI card ports.
Operating System: XP with SP2 and all current updates
Disks: Office Depot DVD+RW 4X 4.7GB
Previously I had trouble when I used the built-in USB 1.1 ports so bought a USB 2.0 USB PCI card. (Disks would not eject and I had to use a paper clip in the emergency drive open hole. That is no longer a problem.)
I hope this helps. Thank you again for listening.

Is the firmware updated for the drive? Which brand of disks are recommended in the drive's user manual? Both of these might be factors in the problems with the disk. You may want to try the recommended brand of DVD+RW to see if this is causing the problem. Let me know how this works out. Thanks!
Thank you for your timely response. I have been busy working the problem from my end and have found that the same problem does not exist if I use DVD-RW format discs! FYI there is no firmware update on the web site and the DVD+RW disc brands on the drive are not locally available ( seem mostly Japan products as is the user guide from obvious grammar problems in the translation.)
The Norton Ghost 9.0 Users guide says it can use DVD-RW and DVD+RW but gives no manufacturers
I guess I will have to just stick to DVD-RW.
.Thanks again for your attention. It's a pity we will never know why this problem exists.
I do support in PCHardware and Windows forums elsewhere and I would say that the advice given in general is it is not a good idea to use RW disks for archives or where you want reliability and compatibility with other readers.
I would suggest that you use straight R disks and since they are usually cheaper than RW use the saving to buy the additional disks.
That the application says that you can use them does not necessarily mean that it is a good idea! <g>
Personally, I always back up to the hard drive (I have multiple internal and external) and then burn to CD/DVD from time to time but so far I have never burned any kind of RW!
