Here's my situation: I have a laptop with Windows XP installed on it. I backed it up a while ago and now the hard drive is starting to fail. Now I know how to restore a backup with the restore CD, but with my particular situation I'm having trouble. I'm trying to use a new Hard Drive to use in this laptop, my backup is from the old hard drive, but this new hard drive is the same model. Now I tried restoring the backup to this new hard drive but when I try booting it into my laptop it just hangs on a black screen (before the windows loading screen appears).
I've restored the backup to the old hard drive, I know it works. Now here's the kicker and maybe why it's not working, when I backed up the hard drive it was starting to fail and I had to "ignore bad sectors" (a Norton Ghost option) when backing up or it wouldn't finish. Maybe the bad sector(s) happens to be on the master boot record? Because the original hard drive (the one I backed up) sometimes fails to boot up. That is what led me to get a new hard drive. But now it seems I'm left in a huge pickle. Did the bad sectors totally mess up my backup?
On a side note, can anyone answers this question which I've had for God knows how long? Why is it that you can't take a hard drive from a computer (or laptop) with a windows installation on it and insert it into a different PC (or laptop and have it work? Does it have to do with the drivers installed on the Windows Installation?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Knowledge is power.
