This latest update (currently on 24.10.9535) is awful. Web browsing has been so glitchy that I’ve been wasting time trying to do basic work. When I temporarily disable auto-protect, browsing works just fine. This is repeatable, so I’m certain that the issue is Norton. The previous versions worked without issue.
After many years of using Norton antivirus products and recommending it to others, this is the last straw. I’m abandoning Norton over this. I don’t have the time or desire to help Norton troubleshoot these issues. I just want a product that works reliably and isn’t changing the UI willy-nilly.
Agree. I’ve been using NIS for many years and liked it a lot. Recently, it “upgraded” itself to Norton 360 without asking me. I was so mad that decided to uninstall the shit and got back to Windows Defender. It looks like Symantec hired a bunch of parasites whose task was to screw up the program interface. Really sad.
You are correct, 2 pc’s recently got the update and I noticed serious issues with my connection. Uninstalled norton and my internet returned to normal.
I’m certain the issue was this update to Norton because of several reasons:
Disabling auto-protect made speeds go back to normal. Re-enabling auto-protect made speeds slow and behavior glitchy again.
This was the case with all three of my PCs. It was not just one computer.
Uninstalling Norton from these PCs resolved the issue.
It’s really too bad, given that I’ve used Norton for years. This update seemed like change for the sake of change and it does not appear to have been properly tested before release.
So after 20+ years of using Norton I did not renew my subscription. Hopefully decision-makers at Norton pay attention to this thread.
Everyone: Norton now uses the Avast A/V engine which surely is due to the cost savings doing so would present Gen Digital and Norton. The issues reside there from what I have discovered using the latest release.
Servicing two products at the same time with the basic core engine, presented some backend issues, that, in my case, entirely caused not only the incorrect products being installed on 9 different devices DURING the update, without my intervention, and, on an active subscription. But also borked my account in the process. I have reverted back to version 22.24.8.36, disabled automatic updates as soon as installation completed and use the intelligent updater to keep definitions up to date. My account is now normal and correct information is there as it is on my devices. I REMOVED Norton and all remnants of it before reinstalling the older version IMA. I’m waiting out the 24.xx bugs to be resolved before having to go back and undo everything again.
Also for me. Two PCs have constant issues with web browsing since the new version was release - pages either not loading at all (sometimes after 2 or 3 re-fresh) or loading without correct formatting. Then Ok for a while, then back to not working. As it is only Norton that has changed on two separate PCs I have come to the same conclusion and decided to move elsewhere after over 10 years.
It’s a shame that they didn’t properly test this release, but I have a business to run and the flakiness that Norton was causing was getting in the way.
Can you elaborate how to stay on 22.24.8.36 so the update does not download?
“Disable Auto Updates and use the intelligent updater to keep definitions up to date”
Are those items in the settings?
Revert to version 22.24.8.36: Disable automatic updates in Norton settings as soon as the installation completes. DO NOT wait even a minute.
The intelligent updater is on a separate site, you will need to download and manually install the update file daily or on whatever schedule you wish from there. The link for it is in one of the threads I linked to.
Yes. Remove version 24.xx and restart. DO NOT reinstall if the tool asks you to do so and cancel it if it tries. Then once you install version 22.24.8.36. As soon as the install completes, disable auto updates and do not run them manually. Use the intelligent updater link for daily update to virus definitions. Make sure you chose the correct version and 64 bit if your OS is 64 bit.
Thank you Soul Asylum for your good advice. You are obviously trying very hard to help.
Personally, I am too old, too tired and too lazy to do another “virus protection course”. For now, I’m just going to let this bad version run. And if nothing is improved or the software continues to annoy me, then I’ll simply uninstall it…
Then Win Defender will have to do its job.
My God - I was happy with this software for 25 years. And then this half-baked and annoying “hybrid monster”…
@Gandalf_der_Graue For what it’s worth, I’m with you (“too old, too tired”). Life’s too short. I’ve been using Norton for 25 years and this v24 “upgrade” is absolutely the worst, bar none. Several friends rely on Windows or Microsoft Defender and have had no issues. They also use free versions of a malware security app.
It’s confusing but Windows Defender and Microsoft Defender are different apps. Win Defender comes with your operating system. MS Defender is bundled with MS 365. Apparently it has additional features.
Thank you for confirming my opinion.
But it is probably pointless to discuss the deterioration of individual programs.
Because in my opinion, such deterioration unfortunately already affects all areas of life…
And if you read the endless list of complaints in this forum, you can even happily prepare yourself for the fact that you will catch a virus after uninstalling it.
To learn to live with it….
And by the way: the new forum software with the multiple translation options is also extremely buggy…
