Norton Icon - "X" marks the spot?

Hi, I'm new to the forum.  The reason I signed up at this time is because of something strange happening to the my icon.  I noticed today that my icon had an 'X' symbol inside a circle at the bottom right hand corner.  I double click on my norton icon to see if everyting was okay.........sure enough it seemed as though everything was okay.  It didn't explain why I had this x mark instead of the checkpoint at the right hand corner of the icon.  I did notice that I had an update to install for Windows XP and proceeded with that.  After that was installed, I had to restart computer and my norton  icon was back to normal.  Was there ever a notification from Norton about this x mark and that it can show  up when you have an update to install for any program?
