I am using the Comcast version of Norton 360, but I did not think it would matter where I posted this. I run Microsoft Flight Simulator X on my 3630K processor and have been getting wonderful frame rates but would note that evey couple minutes the frame rate is slashed by one third for about a minute and then it picks back up. By eliminating things and watching the Norton Performance section it was clear that every time this happened there was a little run of Norton doing something in the background underneath the main CPU core activity of FS X. It must be just enough to knock out game play. FSX is very CPU intensive.
I am running quiet mode but that does not prevent this actitivity. It totally destroys the game play. I am not savvy enought to know what Norton is doing.
Is there anything I can do to disable Norton from runnning backgroung processes during game play or otherwise address this Norton intrusion?
If you go to Settings-Computer-Computer Scans, look for Full System Scan and click on Configure[+]. Look under Scan Schedule for an option for Only at Idle Time. Check that and scans should not run while playing the game.
Try to add the game folder to the Scan Exclusions list and check if the problem persists.
I'd admonish against that.
- This would not prevent Norton's background tasks from running
- This would create a void in computer security--a significant one if the user uses game mods, hacks, no-cd cracks, etc.
To definitively isolate whether Norton's background tasks is the culprit, turn on Silent mode before launching your game. (Cue Blue Thunder theme...)
I use Comcast NBS5 (have used NSS5, same thing) and N360v6 with no gaming issues (my PCs are for gaming first, then other stuff and I get cranky when FPS drops below 60 at all.)
Greg1000o, try this: Run Task Manager, start the game, reproduce the slow down, use alt-tab back to Windows desktop (hopefully, the game will let you do this and not crash), and see what processes are hogging with the game running. Screen shot/capture and share it if you can. :) Also, does your HDD light go crazy/intense during this game? If so, then how much memory/RAM do you have?
I have had this problem (game stutters) but the culprit was Comodo Programs Manager's database population tool running in the background, and not even at a low priority; I found this using the process Pi explained.
