Norton Internet 2012 bot intrusion

I have Norton Inernet security 2012 installed (up to date with live update). I am receiving constant popup messages from it stating that email was not succuessfully sent when I have not been sending email of any kind. There are dozens of messages in the NIS log file similar to those follow:

554 5.7.1 Your email was rejected for policy reasons. Reasons for rejection may be related to content with spam-like characteristics or IP/domain reputation problems. Please contact your email /Internet Service provider for additional help

550-5.7.1 The IP you're using to send mail is not authorized to

550 your email could not be delivered successfully to Siemens (maybe due to spam protection). To avoid any misunderstandings, please contact Siemens

These messages started shortly after a link in a falsified fedx email was clicked. I believe a bot was installed and has been trying to send spam via my computer.

How do I determine what bot was installed and remove it? Why didn't NIS protect me from the bot installation?
