Norton Internet Security 2006 blocks IBM Lotus Quickr Connector

I am using IBM Lotus Quickr with the Quickr Connector.  This allows me to view files on a Quickr server using Microsoft File Explorer.

When I try to connect to the Lotus Quickr site using the Quickr Connector, I am blocked by Norton firewall.

There is no delay between an attempt to connect to the Quickr server and the error message from the Quickr Connector - The error message instantaneously appears as "The server name or address could not be resolved."

The debugger for Lotus Quickr Connector gives an error message of   pEx->m_dwError = 12007

There is no entry in the Norton logs for this connection attempt.

If I turn off Norton firewall and try to connect to the Lotus Quickr server, it works fine. Norton firewall is clearly the problem - but how do I allow this connection to pass the firewall?

In the setup for Norton Firewall, I even entered the IP address for the Quickr server in the "trusted" list.  This did not help either.

I have not experienced any problems with other internet-related programs. Only this one.

Please help.

Not that familiar with 2006 but try this:

Go to settings for the firewall and add a new rule (you want to add this in the section for general rules not programs)

Set it to Allow (in both directions if necessary)

Add the computer (sever) name or IP address (name is better unless IP is static)

In the protocol you want All Types (TCP and UDP at least / local and remote)

If you can, set the rule to log this rule - this way you will know if it is working later.

Name the rule something you will remember and save it.

Once out of the editing part, move the rule to the top of the list so it will be the first to get applied.

Test your connection and report back.

If you have NIS 2006 with an unexpired subscription you are entitled to a free update to the latest 2009 version which is much faster and more lightfooted than previous versions and is more likely to be adapted to current circumstances and settings for them.

All you have to do is go to this location on the Norton website and it will lead you through to the download stage. Use the Save option rather than Run and then you can install from your hard disk copy and keep it for later use if needed.

If you install it on top of the existing installation it will take over many of your settings but it does take an extraordinarily long time to uninstall the old version -- like about 20 minutes in my case with NIS 2008 -- so do not give up if nothing seems to be happening while you do this.

Otherwise you can uninstall in the normal way and then install afresh, which may be best with all the changes over several generations.

Solved.

I tried adding a specific firewall rule, but this did not help.  The results were the same as before.

So I upgraded to NIS 2009.

I allowed NIS 2009 to uninstall my NIS 2006, and then install the NIS 2009 all by itself.

Lotus Quickr Connector worked immediately.

Thanks to all for the help.

Thanks for the good news – depending on where you got the copy of NIS 2009 to install you may want to check the version ID in Help / About – should be 16.5.0.134 or .135
