Ever since we loaded NIS 2009 on our file server, it drops it's network connections. Can anyone help us? We actually need to restart the machine to reestablish the ability to access the PC for file sharing. Yet we can get out to the internet on the PC.
Hi caguinta,
Change the trust level of your file serverfrom SHARED to FULL TRUST in Network Map.
1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. Click View Network Map.
3. Click the file server name or device name in the network map which you need to change.
4. Click [Edit] option next to Trust Level.
5. In the Edit Network Trust Level window, select Full Trust.
6. Click OK.

Hello Yogesh_Mohan and caguinta,
We have the same problem in our network. File server dropes down unexpectedly and nobody can connect it. It occured when we have installed Norton Internet Security 2009. Yogesh's idea to set Full Trust on all of computers in our LAN didn't work. After big struggle with NIS2009 we had to remove it and substitute it with Norton Antivirus 2009. After few hours situation was exactly same. My boss is angry for network is not secured. If anyone know solution, please write me on mail: pajamyki (at) seznam (dot) cz
Thank you in advance

Hi Paja Myki,
Instead of adding all computers in LAN, try to add Trust level to that LAN network. For instructions, refer to this Symantec Support Article. If the problem persists, turn off the Intrusion Prevention from NAV 2009 and check whether the connection drops.

Hi Yogesh,
We too have been having this same problem with NIS 2009, only happens when it is on a "file server". If it is installed on a work station it is OK. Do you know the status of any updates to this problem that Symantec is working on? We alos have tried everything in the support article that you supplied a link to. What we have been doing is not putting it on a PC that is a "file Server"
Hi gsmith44,
Have you tried disabling the Smart Firewall from NIS 2009 and checked whether the connection drops again?
This is to check which component is exactly causing the issue. If it is firewall, try to create a general rule for allowing the communication to and from the File server(using it's Ip address):
1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. In the Internet pane, click Settings.
3. Under Smart Firewall, click Configure next to Advanced Settings.
4. Under Advanced Settings, click Configure next to General Rules.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Add Rule wizard, select Allow, and then click Next.
7. Select Connections to and from other computers, and then click Next.
8. Select Only the computers and sites listed below, and then click Add.
9. Select Individually, enter the IP Address of your file server and then click OK.
10. Click Next.
11. Select Only communications that match all types and ports listed below, and then click Add.
12. Click All Types of communication(all ports, local and remote) and then click Next.
13. Click Next.
14. If you want the logs for this rule to be saved, check Create an event log entry, and then click Next.
15. In the "What do you want to call this rule?" box, type a name for the rule, and then click Next.
16. Click Finish.
17. Click Move Up to move the rule to top, and make it a higher priority.
18. Click OK, and again click OK.
19. Click OK.
Let us know the results.
