I've tried to email a few files to a friend and when I send the email I get an error message from Norton Internet Security.
It says Email error 552 5.2.3 DATA size exceeds maximum permitted.
I haven't been able to find any settings related to the amount of data that can be sent through e-mail but I'd really like to be able to send these files without having to send multiple emails.
The error codes you are seeing are actually coming from your recipient's ISP. They only appear to come from Norton because the Norton email scanner, which sits between your internet provider and your local email client, intercepts them and displays them. 552 5.2.3 means that the message exceeds the maximum size that your recipient is allowed, based on the storage space that is allocated on their ISP's server. So there is not much you can do other than compress the attached files into a ZIP folder, or split the content into multiple messages. Check with your recipient about the maximum message size that is allowed by their ISP.
There are other ways of sending large files besides email. If you both have and Instant messenger like Windows Live Messenger, you can use that to transfer files and they are scanned also. You can also use free ftp's to put a file on that and your recipient can get the file that way.
I would like to correct something that I stated in my earlier post concerning the source of the SMTP error code. I had said that it was the recipient's ISP that had blocked delivery based on the size ot the message. In fact, it would be the sender's ISP that rejected the message. Norton is connected to the email server provided by the user's ISP and so that would be the source of any notice that Norton would display. The cause of the failed delivery remains that the message exceeded size limits, only the ISPs were confused. Thanks to Reese Anschultz for bringing this to my attention.
I'm glad you got it straightened out now. If you consider your problem as solved, would you please mark the post which gave you the answer.? That way everyone will know that this thread has been solved and they will be able to find the correct answer quickly. Thanks.
