I've posted my issues on another forum but was told to post here so am posting my queries one by one in this thread but you can see everything at a glance here:
A young family member by mistake appears to have downloaded NIS 2013 30 day trial because when I booted up the laptop a window popped up asking for it to be installed. On the desktop was "Norton Installation Files" shortcut which points to this folder:
which has FSDPlugin.dll, NIS-TW-20-1-0.exe and Setup.exe.
The question is I can't find the downloaded file in the usual folder the browsers I use (Firefox and Chrome) save to?
It should be something like:
NIS-TW-30-20-3-0-36-EN-US.exe
Nor in the downloads folder of FF and Chrome is there any record! Does the installation delete the .exe file?
Anyway I needed to install a new AV as my Avast! free stopped "speaking" (I googled and others have the same issue - nothing to do with turning off the sound options) so uninstalled Avast!, installed the NIS trial and everything is OK - it doesn't appear to be anything sinister!
It's a small file that starts the download and installation process and once the download is complete the file is removed and the shortcut to the downloaded files appear on the desktop.
The only Norton product on the machine is Norton Security Scan, http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp Is it possible that my Norton Security Scan did a scheduled scan in the background and popped up a window saying I have some issues (always tracking cookies) and my 4 year old nephew clicked on the Norton advert to install some better Norton protection to fix the issues as NSS is merely a scanner. However looking on Google images of NSS the product advertised is Norton 360 NOT NIS!
Does NSS have this download manager? I'm confused ask to where my nephew would have downloaded NIS! He only browses kids sites and asks for the URL to be typed in! Something Norton related must have popped up.
Dick I use the command prompt command (correct me if this is wrong):
C:\>dir/s/a nis*.exe
(to search all subfolders and all files (including hidden and system - archive files)
and get zero results but DaveH says the downloaded .exe is deleted so maybe that's why?
1.Vertically down the far right side of the window is "Manage", "Mobile", "Family", "Safe Web", "Backup". When first installed, "Backup" wasn't visible - there was a downwards pointing triangle to click like to the right of the "Support" menu. After few minutes of going through the menus - just playing around I noticed the "Backup" option was visible without clicking the triangle and this is how it's been ever since.
2.I installed the program around 8pm and the next day at 10pm NIS still had 30 days remaining for the Subscription status. I thought this is great - looks like my installation is going to last forever! I clicked on "Renew" - by accident - just to see what would happen and cancelled the next window but then noticed it had gone down to 29 days. Darn! Not sure if it is supposed to work like that?
Interestingly related to this "anomaly" of the days not going down my executable is called:
NIS-TW-20-1-0.exe (the TW is trialware I guess and 20-1-0 is the version)
Googling I found the download executable is:
NIS-TW-30-20-3-0-36-EN-US.exe (notice the TW-30 i.e. 30 days trialware)

Hi vista,
Comcast offers a free Norton Program named Norton Security Suite (tagged as NSS) and it is a clone of N 360 - so that explains the Google Images displaying smoething similar to N 360. Also Norton Security Suite (NSS) does normally download and install using a Download Manger. So if you are a Comcast customer - I guess it would be possible your nephew forgot to ask and clicked on something to install it.
